My husband and I will be spending the last two weeks in May in Paris. What do the Parisians wear? Do they wear capris or skirts mostly -- or slacks, but is that boot leg or peg leg? Do they wear espradilles - which I love?

I want to fit in! Help me!!

Parisians are typical people and surprisingly there is no dress code. They wear all of the above and more-most likely what you and hubby wear at home.

I have purchased many pairs of espadrilles, all of them in France so someone there is wearing them. They are widely available at hardware stores and the like but usually only in summer months.

I do not like to pay more than 6 euros a pair and so far it has not been necessary to do so.

Sorry I cannot help with the capris and skirts, I prefer trousers.

You don't have to stress about what to wear in Paris .. you can wear almost .. everything ! i mean in the streets , and especially in summer when businessmen dressed in dark suit going to their office cross tourists in shorts and tshirts enjoying their holidays !

The only places you have a dressing 'code' are the good restaurants , clubs , etc : there , off course, avoid to wear shorts ;)

enjoy your stay !

Dont fret about clothing.

Most the people you see will be tourists, and therefore have no more idea about what to wear that you.

Whilst there IS a way that french people dress, you are unlikely to see many of them in tourist Paris. Just make sure your grooming is up to scratch, and you'll be right.

Unless - like me - you have gone for the Serge Gainsborough dishevilled chic look. It does only work for guys and REALLY skinny waif-like women though

We just got back........skirts and capris are everywhere.

Casual slacks, and women are even starting to wear khaki pants!

Peg leg, straight leg, boot cut......I saw them all and they all looked nice.

Jeans now tend to be a darker wash, but those will probably be too warm for you.

Lots of the women were wearing pants that were made out of that "ripstop" material (Eddie Bauer has them). Almost a cargo/parachute pant type of look. Lots of pants with little button pocket on the back (again, look at Eddie Bauer).

Lots of dark khaki, olive and brown colors.

Shirts were lots of light layers in cream-tan-olive-brown or white-gray-black combos.

Lots of short, fitted, cotton jackets.

All of this seems to also be what is popular here.

Shoes.....anything goes as long as it is NOT white running shoes (those are for running there). There were a lot of colored tennis shoes being worn, often with matching colored socks. Espadrilles....yep, they fill the shop windows.

Parisians tend to iron their pants much more than Americans....even their jeans. I swear this is because they hand clothes over their radiators to dry, so they HAVE to! =)

Just don't wear clothes that are too tight or too small for you.

If you have a trim figure, I did see small, fitted t-shirts with fashionable sayings on the front, always under a cute little jacket.

I saw very little in the way of black (maybe Spring has finally sprung!), but they sure don't go in for the spring colors like we do........if you see someone wearing lavendar or pink or baby blue or other "springy" colors, it is sure to be an American! If you did see black,it was part of a layering scheme with white and gray shirts (walk into Old Navy or the Gap and see how lots of shirts are layered together and you'll get the picture).

I should say that the NUMBER ONE THING for shoes is that they be comfortable, because you sure do a lot of walking in Paris!!!!!

I can't believe how much stress this topic caused me before I got to Paris. Having seen what people wear: virtually everything from wildly stylish outfits that we Americans could never pull off in a million years, to trim, neat white blouses with nice jeans, or tight skirts, tight jackets, scarves on everyone, even men, and also the older dames in garish velvet and feathers, my advice is to wear what you like and what you think looks good on you. Don't sweat anything except comfortable, closed toe shoes. The parks, Versailles, Tuilleres, are all loose limestone dirt paths. The women in sandals had dusty white feet and I was glad for my (unfashionable) but comfortable walking shoes.

If you want to look like a tourist, then wear what most Americans wear (casual or even sporty), but if you want to fit in with most Europeans, then dress up more, like what you would wear to church or to a business meeting or even a job interview. I lived in Europe for a few years, so I learned to dress up more stylishly. I loved going back to visit, just so I could wear my suits and dressier coats. Be sure to wear nice accessories, too.

If you want to shop for young stylish fashions that are reasonable, you can even find that in Paris in the Montmartre area, just down the hill from the Sacred Heart Church (Sacre Coer Eglise). Get off the train one stop before the Sacred Heart Church on a weekend or Monday to shop at the open air market near the train station. You'll find the latest fashions at lower prices, especially shoes and handbags.

Be sure to learn a few French phrases if you want to be treated well and understood. That's important! You'll find the French people helpful and kind, if you try to speak their language and learn about their customs.
