Breast Feeding in Paris |
|
Hi, we will be staying in Paris later this year and hopefully will be breastfeeding. Not all countries/cities have the same view/toleration of breast feeding in public. What experiences have members had? |
|
This has been covered before. You might want to do a search on breast feeding and read the previous threads. I think they might help answer your question.

I would say bring a blanket to cover you up and you will be fine.

Raphy est revenue! ça va?

Cover up????????? I'm bringing an 11 month old baby to Paris in May and while I am sensitive to other people and will be discreet as possible, I have no intention of 'covering up' either myself or my baby while I feed her!!
|
Curious about your attitude. Why are you so demonstrative about public breast feeding? Doesn't offend me, but you ARE exposing your breast to public view. If not for the baby, you could be arrested for such a public display. What's wrong with a blanket cover up? Just curious.

<<What's wrong with a blanket cover up?>> It is uncomfortable and makes breast feeding awkward, especially with an 11 month old. It should be noted that one is not exposing one's breast, as there is usually a much larger baby head blocking in any view, except to the most curious. It is also ironic that in Paris, I usually do observe women covering themselves as they nurse. I say ironic because it is very likely that they're doing this within 100 metres of a bus stop boasting an advertisement that features a 1 metre large breast and these same women who are covered in the Paris parks are very likely to be topless at the beach this summer.

When I was growing up almost all mothers breasfed, although they stopped short of when baby was walking and talking, there was never a problem because they were modest and didn't have a need to show off that they had nipples. If they found the blanket strategy to be awkward, they simply sat with their back to the public which is easy to do if a table along a wall is requested. I don't quite understand the nursing nazis and their obsession with the excuse that nursing is natural and they are better mothers because they make a deliberate spectacle of themselves. Barfing is natural, too, but nobody seems to believe that it should be shown in detail to everyone with a sightline.

I don't know how old the OP's baby is, but an 11 months old "baby" (as someone mentioned) hardly needs breastfeeding every third hour as newborn babies do. We are talking about a child who can eat almost everything, if it is chopped out/mashed into pieces that he/she can chew and swallow. With a few practical/logistical pre-arrangements you can avoid breastfeeding in public, if you really want to. Either that - or I would suggest that you be very discreet about it, e.g. you could find a bench in a park a little away from the paths or you could take him/her with you to the womens toilet in a restaurant and feed your baby there. Finally you could choose not to give a damn about what people think and take the risk of someone actually calling the police.

Wow, I am offended, and I am not even fairly militant on the subject. Can't wait to see this thread in the am!

<<and take the risk of someone actually calling the police.>> In PARIS!?! You have got to be joking!
