Best of Corsica

I'm planning a trip to Corsica and I'd like some advice about which part of the Island is the best for beautiful beaches and relaxation in a comfortable and charming setting. (Hotel suggestions would also be appreciated.)

I'd also like some advice about which port to arrive at via ferry (with car) from Toulon. Or should I just plan to arrive sans vehicle and enjoy the island without a car?

Hi Wanderer, here are some ideas to get you started:

For beautiful sandy beaches I suggest the Porto Vecchio area in the South East of the Island. Palombaggia, Santa Giulia and Rondinara beaches are the most famous for their beauty.

The north of the island around Calvi and Algajola is also very attractive and with agreeable sandy beaches and plenty to do and see.

For dramatic coastlines try the NorthWest coast. Reddish rocks go straight into the sea and the sunsets are magnificent. Beaches are mostly pebbly and the driving is often arduous along narrow precipitous roads. Piana, Porto and Gradelle are nice places along this coast. In addition the Gulf of Girolata is just stunning, but difficult to access except by boat.

A car is definitely a must if you want to explore this island as there is little public transport.

Hi Wanderer,

I very much agree with the above and to answer your other question, from Toulon your can go to Bastia or Ajaccio (with Corsica ferries). Note that should you decide to go to Porto Vecchio, as opposed to Calvi, you should definitely arrive at Bastia which is much closer than Ajaccio (although you could not tell from a map).

Enjoy Corsica!!

Thanks for the info. Is there a particular hotel that you have found exceptional in any of these spots?

it all depends on how deep your pockets are: for high budget these would definitely be on my list:
