Paris to Chartres to Angers

I want to spend a day and a night in Chartres after a flight to CDG from the US that arrives early morning (without renting a car), then go on to Angers early the next morning. Any help with where to stay economically but safely for a mature woman traveling alone, how to find train times etc, what to do in Chartres, would be greatly appreciated. Your advice has been great in the past.

To get from CDG to Chartres by public transport, take the Air France bus from CDG to Montparnasse train station, which is where you catch a train to Chartres. The trip takes around an hour. It is pointless making advance bookings: these are local trains with no seat reservations and no discounts for advance purchase.

To get from Chartres to Angers, you take a local train to Le Mans and change there to a TGV. If your plans are firm, you can take significant savings by buying in advance. Tickets go on sale 90 days before travel.

You can get train times and costs, and make bookings, in English at www.tgv-europe.com/en but use Australia or Great Britain as the "Ticket collection country" on the first screen. If you use USA, you get another site that has much higher prices and does not list all the trains.

If you can get the cheapest tickets, known as PREMs, you can print them on your computer, and e-tickets are being introduced for some other journeys. For other tickets, say you want to collect in France. You can collect from a staffed ticket office at a station or from an SNCF boutique shop. If you have a "chip-and-PIN" card, you can also collect from a ticket machine. To collect, you must have the *exact* same card used for the booking.

There are also local TER trains between Le Mans and Angers, some of which take the same amount of time as the TGVs. These too can be booked on the day, or you get tickets for both legs at the Ticket Office at Montparnasse, if you want to maintain flexibility. If by mature, you mean 60 or over you may be able to get reduced price Decouvert Senior tickets, depending on the time of your trips.

As to what to do in Chartres - in addition to the Cathedral, the Tourist Office nearby would be a useful place to visit. I also recommend strolling around the area by the river at the bottom of the hill.
