We are just returned from two weeks in France which started with a week in Burgundy. During our stay, we did two different wine tasting tours, both of which we enjoyed. I wanted to leave this post because of the difference in cost between the two. First, we did a day long tour with Max Renau, who is relatively new to the business. He can be found at www.dijon-rentalhome.com, or through his wife's email, beatricerenau@aol.com. Max is a native of Burgundy and very knowledgeable about wines. He took us to three vineyards, a fabulous lunch, and a tour of the Hospices de Beaune and Clos de Vougeot as well. There were four of us on the tour (I think his limit is six), and the cost was 50 euros apiece plus lunch. Max got into this business because he also rents apartments in Dijon, and he initially started putting together tours for his rental clients. His English is excellent, and he is warm, sociable, and flexible about timing, locations, activities, etc. All in all, could not have been better.

Our second tour, two days later, was with Burgundy Discovery -- www.burgundydiscovery.com. David and Lynne have been in the business for a few years, and they give an excellent tour. We did their Grand Tour, which included tastings at three vineyards and another wonderful lunch. The tastings were more elaborate than the ones Max put together (five or six wines instead of three or four), and the vineyards were a little more high end. David and Lynne are both very knowledgeable, and English is their first language. There were six of us on this trip as well -- again, that is the maximum number. By the way, we structured the tours this way for a specific reason: We were arriving in Burgundy a day ahead of our travelling companions and were staying in Dijon because the train connection was easier. We are also more interested in wine than our friends, so we thought we would take advantage of the extra day to do a little more touring. We originally asked David and Lynne about picking us up in Dijon, but they were unable to do so -- which is why we ended up contacting Max. He picked us up at one hotel in Dijon and dropped us off at another closer to Beaune later in the afternoon. In our opinion, his operation is a little more user-friendly than Burgundy Discovery.

Anyway, the cost of the Burgundy Discovery tour was 200 euros apiece -- quite a substantial difference. I am not making any judgment about whether Burgundy Discovery was worth the premium -- just saying that we really enjoyed both tours. Those with financial considerations should think about contacting Max for sure.

tennismom - glad to hear you had a good time.....we enjoyed both Dijon and Beaune as well. I wish we had known about Max before we went....oh well, there is always next time!! We did have a great wine guide in Provence, though, which we highly recommend.

I take it you had no problem finding ATM machines and had plenty of good shopping time!

Thanks for the report!

My wife and I are touring Burgundy in late October.

Question: what wineries did Max take you to? Just curious as I would love a guided tour since neither of us speak French.

Thank you.

We went to Morin Pere & Fils in Nuit St. Georges and to Pierre Andre in Aloxe Corton. We had lunch at Le Cellier Volnay, and we also visited the Hospices de Beaune and Clos de Vougeot. I think those are the correct names and places, but I am not the world's best notekeeper.

No problem finding ATMs (nor in finding places to spend our euros). Thanks

I believe my friend & I were the other 2 people with you on Max's tour. I found him very informed, helpful, his vineyard choices nice ( I would rather go to a smaller producer) and he was very well spoken in English.

Next time in Dijon I would definitely book a day or 2 with him. Being new to this business I think his tours will only get better.

I also did one other tour while in Burgundy that was twice the money without the charm of Max's.

I had originally booked a week with Britt Karlsson of BK wine in Beanie but her tour was cancelled. She does tours in various wine regions that are very reasonable, informed and also includes many gourmet choices. Check out her website BKwine!

Hope the rest of your trip was great! I'm still dreaming about that rooster we had for lunch that day!

I meant Beaune not Beanie. Also check out Quart de Chaume day cars if ever in Loire. Great guided day tours to 3 or 4 producers. My driver was a wine buff from Vouvray, he took me to some really great out of the way producers for 165 euros!

We just got back from Burgundy and we had a wonderful tour with Max. We stayed in one of their apartments so he picked us up the next day. We went to 3 vineyards, Chateau Neuf, and visited his barge/went along the canal. There were just 2 of us so it was 100 euros each but we were very happy--he even stopped at a grocery store for us to get food for the evening and waited till we were done and then took us back to the apartment! The apartment was wonderful too. Thanks for the report. Ours was not a "snooty" wine tour but more relaxed and down to earth. I would think some of teh more high end tours could be even more educational etc. I just enjoyed learning about wine and history. We even jumped out of the van to taste grapes the harvesters had left on the vines!
