Day trips from St. Malo

We will be driving from Mont Saint Michel to St. Malo(probably arrive early afternoon). We have two night in St. Malo. I would really appreciate any recommendations of day trips to do. We will be traveling with our two teenage boys. I would like to see Dinan, but wasn't sure if this was an entire daytrip or just a few hours. thank you!

You should get information on Dinard, you can go there by boat from St Malo.

Or, as said above, Cancale and Cote d'Emeraude, there are cruises departing from Dinard ( and maybe St Malo) that last an afternoon. Very pleasant

Dinan is certainly worth at least half a day. Nearby Lehon can be seen in less than an hour and it's well worth the drive or walk from Dinan. We took most of a day to drive around the estuary of the Rance. Lots of people like St Suliac. Thinking back, I seem to recall we liked the west side of the Rance estuary better than the east side. Once we passed St Suliac heading south, there was less of interest to us.

If you are book collectors, Becherel is a book town (mostly French books, of course) and it has a charm of its own even if you aren't shopping for books.

If you're interested in locks (canal locks), there are 11 at Hede, close together.

A quiet walk along the Ille-et-Rance canal can be nice in the evenings. Not very exciting for teenage boys, probably.

How about a drive along the beautiful Emerald coast? It's relatively close to St. Malo and I think your boys will get a kick out of a visit to the spectacular Fort La Latte which is located at the tip of Cap Frehel.

Do stop in Saint Suliac on your way to Dinard. It is a beautiful small village. Cancale is a must if you love oysters!

If you want to see pictures and learn some more about many of the places already mentioned you can look at a photo report I wrote about exploring that area: http://tinyurl.com/86s4v8f
