Brittany & Normandy How should we travel?

We are a family of 3 looking to see some of Brittany & Normandy this September. How is it driving in a rented car along the coast? My husband and I prefer to travel by train so we can relax, but it seems like more can be seen in this area if you have a car. The towns on our list include Dinard, Dinan, Mont Saint-Michel, and Honfleur. Any comments, thoughts or advice about train travel vs. car travel would be appreciated. We are not as concerned about cost as we are about relaxing and being able to enjoy the scenery.

There isn't an extensive rail network in that area, and infrequent services where there is a railway line, so I'd recommend the car in this instance. By September the main crowds will have gone (apart from at Mont St Michel, of course), and driving should be a relatively relaxed affair. Allow plenty of time for your journeys, pack a picnic, and enjoy the scenery.

We always drive in this area and, as mentioned above, by September the roads are clear and driving is a pleasure. Depending on how long you plan to stay and your interests there is so much to see and do in Brittany and in Normandy. We have been back and forward there for over 40 years and keep discovering something new. Our children loved it too and now take their own children to explore it with them.

It is possible to visit the places you mention by public transport. If you based yourself in St Malo to start off with you could get to Dinard by using the little passenger erry across the Rance estuary, to Dinan by train with a change at Dol, and to Mont St Michel either by a scheduled bus or by joining a day tour. Moving on there are trains along to Caen, again with a change at Dol, although these are not frequent and so require planning. There are buses from Caen to Honfleur - google Buses Verts for timetables. It may be that you think it easier to get a hire car for this part of the journey.

Driving in this region is not difficult... the crowds are gone in September so you can have a relaxing drive along the coast. The beaches are not crowded and the water is still warm! Do hire a car, you get to see so much more - don't forget Cancale (for the wonderful seafood) and St Malo too.
