Biarritz with Family

Hello, we are a family of five ( children 16, 13 and 10 years) and we will be staying in Biarritz from 30th December - 5th January 2013.

Can anyone please offer some advice on the following;

1. New Years Eve - will there be any celebrations suited to families, such as fairs, fireworks. Also is there any restaurant recommendations that would be of quality in terms of food and wine but also family friendly?

2. Some of my family plan to surf during this week if conditions are suitable. All are very competent surfers and have no problem with surfing in very cold conditions. We will also have a car so will be able to check out the nearby surf spots. As we are travelling from Australia and would prefer not to bring boards and wetsuits. Will board and wetsuit hire be available during winter and will the equipment be of reasonable standard? Will smaller boards (5"5 or so ) be available?

From my research I get the impression that it is pretty quiet at this time and that some surf shops may not be open?

Thank you.

I have never been in Biarritz for New Year but there are plenty of families here so I'm sure there at least fireworks. I have asked a friend and am waiting to hera back from them.

As there are lots of families most restaurants will be family friendly. Have a look through Trip Advisor's restaurant list to find some restaurants that suit your budget and tastes.

During the summer lots of temporary surf school/hire/shops appear. A few of the better ones stay open all year round. These will have an excellent range of boards to rent. For a 5"5' the choice might be limited but around the 6"0' mark there will be plenty to choose from.

Try the following shops:

If you cant find equipment in Biarritz just go to Hossegor. There are even more surfshops and better waves as well.

Have fun

There is also a company in Labenne that rents good quality boards. They deliver too but if you are taking a trip up to Hossegor then you could stop if in Labenne on the way.

When conditions are right the waves in Hossegor are world class. But they aren't for everyone. I was there this morning and the swell was pretty big and it was breaking hard onto shallow sand. If the OP is a longboarder (for example) then this would totally not be suitable.

When the conditions aren't perfect for Hossegor then there isn't any variation on the type of surf break. That's when the breaks around Biarritz come into their own as you can find sheltered spots etc.
