War cemetery at Sigolsheim

On our way from Kientzheim to Colmar we came along a huge war cemetery on the hill above the village Sigolsheim. There are more than 1000 gravestones, a lot of them muslim ones.

It was impressive and touching - and hopefully a warning for the next generations.

I think it´s a pity that the information room downstairs isn´t very well maintained, but it´s probably difficult because there is nobody to look after.

We watched an old lady who seemed to have a look to a certain grave and felt somewhat ashamed, as Germans.

We also visited this cemetery and agree it is very moving. And in a wonderful location with views over the vineyards of the Alsace.

Tis a pity indeed! It's always been somewhat neglected, and is also a hangout for teenagers drinking beer and whatnot (not that I'm blaming youth, some things never change).

Yes, we saw a lot of empty bottles and the information room has been abused as WC...

I think it´s difficult and very expensive to care for such an area outside of the village and somewhat hidden on a hill.

But the cemeteries themselves are well maintained and a worthy place.

My wife's late father fought on that hill in December 1944. He was haunted his entire life by the combat he endured in Alsace. My wife and I visited in 2010 and 2011, and the woman who rented our apartment to us in Katzenthal apologized to us in advance for the fact that the site was sometimes abused by teens and other vandals. She was clearly embarrassed to have Americans like us see it that way...though we assured her the same thing happens everywhere, including the U.S.
