Macreddin Village & surrounds |

Hello I am gettingg married next year in June and the ceremony is in St Kevins Church in Glendalough and the reception in Brook lodge in Macreddin Village. The Brooklodge rates are quite pricey and i was wondering could anyone recommend B&B's, hotels, apartments close by that i could advise my guests of? any other tips or hints in relation to the area too? for example, a great spot for photos(i know it is beaufiful all over) or anything esle a bride may need to know as i am trying to organise it all from Sydney. Thanks |

Hey. Congrats. Great choices. Another good hotel, albeit not much cheaper, is The Woodenbridge Hotel(woodenbridgehotel.com). Lawless's Hotel is also nearby (Aughrim), but expensive. I doubt it in June, but maybe you could get a self catering deal for the weekend for guests. I stayed at Glendale in Laragh, and I know they do weekends off season. Then, just above Avoca is The Meeting of the Waters(Avonmore and Avonbeg Rivers) for a pic idea. Obviously near the round tower with the lakes in the background in Glendalough also. Another place is between the church and reception called The Glen of Imaal. It is very scenic on a nice day(I'm pulling for ya). Wow. That really does sound like a great day. I was in St. Kevin's Church/kitchen. It would be really nice for a wedding. Good luck in your planning. I'm sure you'll get loads of ideas. If not, I'll give them. Lol.

Boru - is this the Same Glen of Imaal that the army use for testing ordinance? We would like the wedding to go with a bang, but not necessarily that type :O)

Ahh, what's an odd shell amongst friends. Lol. You're on a roll. Actually you might see big red signs near a couple of places. There is one near Rathdrum that I can't remember exactly what it advised. It was something to the effect that if you saw a red flag along with the sign, that you'd be proceeding at your own risk. I couldn't believe that. If kids occasionally get their kicks changing sign post directions, they'd be in stitches over removing the flag. Lol.

Glendalough is beautiful so photos wont be a problem. I can recommend The Wicklow Way Lodge B & B as accomodation for your guests. High up in the mountains in Oldbridge, near Roundwood, but just 10/15 mins from Laragh and Glendalough. The rooms with balconys are especially lovely. Immaculate accomodation, wonderful hosts, fabulous breakfasts and beautiful views of the mountains. They have their own website. Tell them to book more than one night, its too lovely to leave too soon.

God I hope the Wicklow Way Lodge isn't another Kathleen's Country House.

alilovesdan, I hope you're still watching your post. You lucky thing, getting married in St. Kevin's Church! I have been to two weddings there and it is such a lovely place. If it is a nice day (and I sincerely hope so for you) you can get all your photos done in Glendalough, for example at the Upper Lake. I think you need to get accommodation for your guests closer to Macreddin - Laragh and area is simply too far away. The last wedding reception I was at (after the ceremony in St. Kevin's) was at Rathsallagh House in Wicklow. That hotel supplied the couple with a list of B&Bs close by so guests could book a room well before the wedding. The hotel also provided a bus every 30 minutes during the night to take guests to their respective accommodation. Maybe Brook Lodge provides this service, too (probably at extra cost)? You could get in touch with them and ask about alternative accommodation for your guests. I am sure they'd be happy to help, particularly since you're arranging all this form Sydney. Good luck!

I can recommend Avoca Tower Lodge http://homepage.eircom.net/~avocatowerlodge/ Site is old, but the email is still good It's a nice small guesthouse run by Margie, who is terriffic. Avoca village is about 10mins from the Brooklodge, and I'm sure a late collection could be arranged to get your guests back to the B&B Hopefully the weather will be good, in which case 5 mins up from the church is the old Monastic ruins, and the two lakes, which could be very good for photos. Congratulations anyway!

Oh Gosh, Ive just looked up Kathleens Country House & see what you are referring to. I am a genuine (maybe over enthusiastic) returnee from my first trip to County Wicklow. I found this site very helpful when I was planning my trip to Ireland and was keen to tell others how lovely I had found my stay. I am sorry that my enthusiasm led some to wonder whether it was genuine or not. And having re-read my posting I can see how it might have seemed that way.
