I can't see how to post a review of the Stenaline service, it does not appear when I type the above subject into the Search box, so here goes.
We decided to take the slow boat + train rather than the usual Ryanair to London.
Plus: easy parking at Rosslare, no distance to the ferry.
No baggage limitations, no passport showing, can bring on liquids and sharp objects, no baggage charges, no taking off belts and shoes. No problem with knee room. Time to bask in the sun on deck if you're lucky with the weather. We brought a picnic but there is a reasonable looking restaurant.
It's twice the time - 12 hours from home to London, vs 6 for home-Dublin-Stansted-train to London. Similar price to air if you book weeks ahead, cheaper closer to the day because price is stable at 90 euro return Rosslare-Paddington.
Exchange rate for euro is not good, buy sterling before travelling.
Arrive directly at station in Fishguard, no walking. Very small station with a caff, no ATM, nothing like airport lounges at either Rosslare or Fishguard.
Very slow train to Cardiff, total 5 hrs to London from Fishguard.
Good to see painting kept up, hope they're not just painting over the rust.
Some people who travel without passports probably don't have them for a reason. The ill-kempt family who strew the Fishguard train with their rubbish, the wino who drops a clinking bag beside you in the toilets and does not wash his hands when leaving (think of that holding the rails).
I'm not converted to sea travel, but it's certainly the relaxing way to go if you can spare a day to travel.
