Walking from town centre to Muckross House & Gardens

Hi,

We are staying at the Best Western Eviston and will have a rental car but because of traffic and my husband not used to driving on right side of car thought maybe we could walk to Muckross House & Gardens. I know it is about an hour walk so would it be an easy walk, is there walking paths on the road and is there enough signage so we would not get lost. Do we have to enter Killarney National Park to find Muckross House? Also, is we felt we were too tired to walk back to town after exploring the park and Muckross House, are there taxis we could take back to town and about how much would that cost? Prefer that over the jaunting cars.

Thanks as always for all your help and advice.

Walk, if you wish, and yes footpaths for most of the way, but the drive is so simple, why not take the car? The road is very good and traffic flows very well. There is a huge free car park at Muckross House, From there you can explore the house, gardens, see the lake, walk to the Waterfall (20 - 25 mins), and have a snack in the excellent café just adjacent to the house. The gate is only about 1.5 miles from Killarney town. There are no taxi stands at the house or near it. The Jaunting cars are they only way back really if you don't want to walk.

Drive, it will give you lots more freedom.

If you have got the car to Killarney, you really won't have an issue getting the car to Muckross. The car park, as Bryno has said, is large and its also easily negotiated.

Once you start your driving you will be a bit more relaxed.

If you did walk you could ask a local to call you a taxi to pick you up at the house but I agree with the others that you are better off driving and using your walking time to walk around the park rather than along the main road from town. Also, as you arrive at the National Park area there will be 3 main signs for the park. The first is what I call the first entrance and you will see and stone gate and lodge on your right and parking on your left. Do not park here. The next entrance will be for Muckross Abbey with parking and gate on your right. This is around a bend and just before Muckross Park Hotel. Do not park here. Continue on to the entrance on your right through which you can drive into the park. This one will lead you to the parking by the house that the others have spoken of.
