 Visiting churches in Dublin

Hello everyone,

I've just seen that the two major churches in Dublin, that is Christ Church and St. Patrick's Cathedral, charge visitors with a rather expensive entrance fee (around 5,50 or 6€ each!). Now, my question is: is visit of their interiors worth the price? They look lovely from the outside (judging from some pictures I've seen), but I've got no clue of how they look inside.

Just in case - is one of them particularly better than the other?

Thanks in advance

Yes, both are worth a visit and if I had to pick one I would pick St. Patrick's. It seems to me to have more character, more knick knacks, and the internationally known Dean Swift - right, everyone knows Swift right?

And correct me if I am wrong but one of the two definitely charges while the other has a suggested donation price? And no, I can't remember which one is which!

Thanks a lot Tonyirish,

I'll definitely visit the interiors of St. Patrick's, and presumably also of Christ Church Cathedral.(Of course everyone knows Swift: isn't he the author of Gulliver Travels?)

Are there any other churches in Dublin which may be particularly interesting for their architecture?

Christ Church cathedral houses the tomb of 'Strongbow' (Richard de Clare) who led the Norman invasion of Ireland in around 1170.

St. Patricks cathedral houses the remains of Dean Jonathan Swift (Gullivers Travels fame).

Both cathedral's are interesting and well worth visiting while the entrance fee goes towards the continual restoration of these ancient buildings.

Another old church nearby is St. Audoen's dating from the 12th century, noted as the oldest parich church in Dublin and houses the remains of many prominent Dublin folk from those times from being in the ancient walled city of Dublin. Another historic church dating from the twelfth century is St. Werburgh's church also has some fine Norman architecture.

Have a look at st. Stephen's Church of Ireland(known as the Peppercanister church). It's worth finding though I'm not sure if there are official visiting times outside the Summer Season unless you visit during a service.

It's also worth noting that if you're going to make the trip from Italy to Dublin, then I wouldn't let a 6 euro entrance fee prevent me from seeing anything! You'll pay around that for a pint in Temple Bar in the evening, so go mad and see both!

Hi there Dottling

What about St Michans Church in Church St Dublin

where you can go down to the vaults and see some very old bodies that have been preserved in the dry climate below the church for hundreds of years one is over 800 years according to accounts

Also there is a beautiful organ there and it was on this organ that the musician Handel first performed the famous Messiah and it has some beautiful wood carvings on it ,in fact one of our previous bank notes carried an image of this carving of musical instruments

Last time I visited there was a human skull on the alter I have no idea why ,so you can see it's a little out of the ordinary although it doesn't look impressing from the outside, open Mon to Fri 12.30 to 15.30 addmission 3euro 50 .
