Driving from Cork to Kilkenny

Hello everyone,

Can everyone tell me how long it would take to drive from Cork to Kilkenny? My husband and I are going to be in Ireland for 4 days, coming over from continental Europe, and flying back to the states when we leave. We are wanting to split our time between Kilkenny and Cork (two nights each place). I know there is plenty to see if we just stay in Cork, but I have heard wonderful things about County Kilkenny and want to see it too. We plan on hiring a car when we get into Cork (we'll see if we can drive English-style!)

Also, any recommandations for guest houses or B&B's in Cork would be appreciated. We are looking for a room for $100 a night or less.

Finally, how hard is the Cork airport to get to and navigate through? If we are boarding an international flight, how early should we get there?

Thanks in advance!

Cork Airport is quite small, so navigation is never a problem. I would normally say turning up 75 minutes before your flight is due to leave is fine. The one caveat is that there are a number flights that leave between 3pm and 5pm in the afternoon and it your flight is at that time, it might be better to make that 90 minutes.

The drive from Cork to Kilkenny is about 2 hours. Although there appear to be a wide choice of routes (i.e. there's no one direct route), the only ones I'd practically consider are to use the M8/R693 or the M8/N24/N76. Must of the others aren't as good in reality as they look on a map.

The usual route would take you near to Cashel and Cahir. Cashel has the Rock of Cashel and Cahir has the rather wonderful Swiss cottage and a proper "castle ." You would come off the motorway at Urlingford and continue through Freshford into the city. (All of those sites will be quite busy)

OR, you could take the road through East Cork and visit the Jameson distillery at Midleton, proceed through Killeagh, on close to Youghal and take quick detour to Ardmore, home of a round tower, wonderful monastic carvings, a lovely pottery and handcraft shop and have lunch in the bar of the Cliff house hotel.

Apart from the distillery, you could have the other places to yourself. (Cliff House excepted)

Back to the main road and you have the scenery of the coast and mountains all the way past Dungarvan.

You can by pass Waterford or stop for a look around. The road past Waterford takes you very close to Jerpoint Abbey, a worthwhile detour too.

I would recommend the M8/N24/N76 as suggested by blackgreen - http://goo.gl/maps/x25oM

From Cahir to Clonmel to Kilkenny, it is particularly scenic and Clonmel is a nice town for a short visit.

For your return journey to Cork, go via Waterford - http://goo.gl/maps/DN2vX

You all are very helpful! Thank you so much! And HarveyIreland, you provided links to some things I was already looking at. Good to know I'm on the right track as to what to see/do! I'm so excited to be visiting Ireland for the first (and I certainly hope not the last) time! 14 months can not go by fast enough!

Plenty more to see along that route, so if you decide to go that way, give me a shout and I can add more ideas.
