1st Visit to Isle of Skye

Hello :) My husband and I have been to Scotland once, but we are planning to return to visit Glasgow and the Isle of Skye. We are looking at 5 September - 14 September 2013. My company is London based, so I would like to start our trip in London for a few days and then head up to Scotland. We'll likely take a train/plane to Glasgow and then drive to the Isle (stay in Portee?). I'm having a hard time researching the Isle of Skye - if anyone can provide any suggestions on where to go, where to stay, what to do, and any other helpful hints it would be MUCH appreciated :) Cost saving tips are always a bonus! Thank you!

I'm not sure why you're having a hard time researching Skye. There's loads of info here.

What to do? Well, what attracted you to Skye? I'm guessing maybe the landscape, the scenery or the climbing? It'll be all around you. If not, can you tell us?

Where to stay depends on what you want to do. Portree is quite central if you want to visit all parts of the island. There are hostels if you are on a budget. A bit more info would help

Hi there. Yes, I'm surprised you are finding it difficult to research Skye, and have used most of the links suggested by Yorkielass. We spent two weeks in Skye last September and loved the place. I think where you stay depends on what you want to see and where you want to go. We rented a place in Ullinish the first week and toured the north, and the second week stayed in Broadford and toured the south.

Before we went we decided what we wanted to see and planned several days out by area, ie Waternish, Diurnish,Trotternish. We did several walks, even though we are not serious walkers, and for me the north of the island was the most spectacular. We walked up to the Old Man of Storr and the Quirang. Both fantastic experiences and scenery. We rented a house with a view over the sea towards the Cuillins, and every day the colours of the sky and clouds were different. Fabulous.

The Fairy Glen walk near Uig is a delight (see the Walk Highlands website) and the walk down (and back up) to Neist Point is really hard going, but stunning..

I would say in September you could get a cottage to rent for around £400 and there are smaller places which could be a bit cheaper. Driving on Skye is easy and around ever corner is another fab view.

In the south we also wanted to take the boat trip from Elgol to Loch Coruisk, but the weather was against us, but I understand that its a must.

we flew over from the US and spent a week on skye. We stayed just north of Portree in a property call the Skye Croft. Nice, but I think it is booked.

I would consider staying in Waternish. Only a twenty minute drive or so to Portree where the grocery store is.

You will be just a short drive to trotternish, which us amazing.

We loved the Isle of Skye!! Probably our favorite in Scotland, which is saying a lot because the entire trip to Scotland was amazing!

We purchased detailed trip ideas from "Secret Scotland" - great plans - I like specific details and this was perfect - we could choose what we wanted to see and all directions were included.

We stayed at the Glenview Hotel in Staffin. For us it was perfect! Loved the location, the food was wonderful (run by a gourmet chef) I highly recommend!
