MOBAL cellular coverage on Skye? |
Any chance my Mobal cell phone will ring on Skye/Camus Croise? Thanks, Sandy |
I believe the chances are pretty good that Mobal works in most, if not all, of Scotland and that area of Skye is fairly well-populated. (I certainly hope this is the case as I have one and am traveling to the northenmost part of Skye in 8 weeks!) Last Spring, we crossed the very remote area between Lochaline and Strontian, a bit Southeast of Skye, and had a signal throughout the journey. Mobal's call rates aren't cheap, but I've found the service to be very good even with an much older phone- and, of course, I own it and pay no monthly fees for a permanent UK mobile number.

It depends on which mobile network that your phone will use. Here in the UK we have O2, Vodafone, Orange and some others. Find out which UK service provider your phone will work with. O2 and Vodafone have the best coverage on Skye, Orange has coverage but it is fairly patchy.

Not sure about Skye itself, but I was caught out recently when I discovered there is absolutely no Virgin network coverage on nearby mainland at Plockton. I was told that the fishermen use Vodaphone as they find it most reliable so that might be your best bet.

hi sandyhibiscus I was on Skye for a week last October. My mobile (cell) network is Vodafone. I could only get a signal at the car park at the rear of the Co-op store in Broadford and also close to the shops a little further along on the left hand side towards portree direction. Vodafone is reckoned to have the best coverage in uk, it is the network favoured by business users in the last century as having best coverage. In the UK in remote rural areas you may find mobile phone coverage patchy. if you travel by train you will almost certainly get cut off as the trains travel through tunnels. Hope this helps. Have a great trip! sunseeker

Same as Sunseeker I can't get a vodaphone signal North of the Co-op car park in Broadford
This is rubbish Vodafone and orange both have very good coverage all over the island. There are only small pockets in which you will not be able to get a signal.
But make sure your phone will work on the GSM networks used in Europe. The frequency bands used in Europe are different from the US. Most new phones will automatically switch - but do check your phone.
According to MOBALs website they will roam onto whichever local network has the strongest signal, rather than being partnered with just one carrier, so you should be OK.
