Good destinations with Wemyss bay(scotland) as base.

We are a group of 4 adults and 3 kids and travelling to scotland next week (End March). We will be living in the parkdean campsite in wemyss bay. We will have 3 full days to roam around.

We have shorlisted loch lomond, glencore and glenfinnan (viaduct) as our must see destinations. We are thinking of doing a circular route everyday for three days starting and ending in the base.

What are the possible destinations which we can cover on our way? Possible routes are also welcome.

Thank you for the help.

Wemyss Bay is the ferry departure point for a trip to the Isle of Bute. You can do that as a day return trip and jusy stay on the island. You can travel down the coast and do something similar - Ardrossan - Arran. Both Bute and Arran have buses so in theory you can travel as a foot passenger, but to be honest a car would be handy especially with Arran. Or Largs-Cumbrae. So that's 3 possible island trips.

Unfortunately Wemyss bay is not ideal for circular routes into the central highlands: you have to look at the geography and a road map. SO round trips northwards will end up involving lots of driving.

You can travel down the coast to Ayr - and then cut inland. If your into Burns and his poetry, consider villages like Alloway or Tarbolton, Mauchline. You can then travel northwards through Kilmarnock and there are a few very minor B roads can help you shortcut into the wilds to shorten the journey home. Though it has to be said Wemyss Bay is *not* well appointed with alternative roads in and out.

If you want to head north, there are a number of permutations, so I'll simply list 'ways of getting north' rather than circular routes.

1. Ardrossan-Arran Ferry. Drive across arran. Lochranza-Claonaig ferry. You can drive northwards towards Oban

2. Wemyss Bay - Bute Ferry. Drive across Bute, and take the short ferry, Rhubodach-Colintraive. You can then drive northwards towards the 'rest and be thankful, with options to Inveraray/Oban, or to Arrochar/Loch Lomond

3. Gourock-Dunoon Ferry, and then you drive north to join route 2

4. Drive towards Glasgow until you hit the Erskine Bridge, and from there you can head to Dumbarton then loch Lomond.

Just for illustration, I took the Bute Ferry to Colintraive, then to Oban, then Glencoe, and then returned by Loch Lomond and the Erskine Bridge. Approximately 250 miles, and 7 hours non-stop driving. Glenfinnan would be further. Do these distances make any sense to you as a day trip? They don't to me: far too far, all day in the car, no time to stop and see and do. But that's what a circular route to your chosen destinations might imply.

I've given you lots of facts in the hope you'll understand these are not realistic proposals.
