It's about 120 miles from Inverness to John O'Groats; driving time about two and three quarter hours.

Citylink coaches won't make the journey early enough for you to catch the ferry at John O'Groats. Would you consider a stay in Thurso or Wick the night before the tour and taking a taxi early in the morning?

It'a a four hour train ride to Thurso. http://tickets.scotrail.co.uk/ When I was 19 we then walked the mile to Scrabster to catch the ferry to Stromness. There is a late afternoon ferry. https://online.northlinkferries.co.uk

Peter, do you only have one day for Orkney or can you spare more time? We drove from Inverness to John O'Groats and it took us around 3 hours. We left at 4AM in order to catch an early ferry.

If you can manage at least a one night stay on Orkney, I'd strongly urge you to do it. There's so much to see even if you just stick to the mainland that one day really won't be enough.

If you can make it happen, don't miss Orkney. We were there summer before last and it's a special place. We rented a car, drove from Inverness and then caught the last ferry from Scrabster to Stromness.

It would be easier if you could spend a couple of nights on Orkney so you can have a full day tour and do it justice. There are trains from Inverness to Thurso and Wick, taking about 3 and a half hours, with a connecting bus from either of these stations to John O'Groats (another 30 mins to an hour), from where you can connect with the afternoon ferry to Orkney http://www.jogferry.co.uk/Home.aspx Trains aren't very frequent so you would need another day to travel back to Inverness.
