1. Re: mountain railway

Are you a skier?

The area is a National Park and the area around the top station is sub-arctic tundra.. The idea is NOT to encourage people to leave the skiing area.

People who are determined walkers can walk up from the half way station and have complete access to Cairngorm mountain and the surrounding plateau.

People using the railway are assumed to be tourists and hence are encouraged to stay within the skiiing areas - and the top station is partially fenced off.

In January you are in mid-Winter - you can expect quite a bit of snow at the top. The other reason for discouraging access is to do with experience and equipment.

So during the summer access is banned; during the winter access is heavily discouraged and the assumption is the funicular will be used only by skiers. That's not quite a no, though, isn't it?

If there is a snow cover on the ground and skiing is going on you can leave the reason you cant go wondering yourself when no snow cover is to stop you damaging the flora - it is artic conditions on the tops so growth very slow. I would warn that if you are not an experienced walker dont go far as conditions change within seconds.

3. Re: mountain railway

This won't help in January but for others visiting over the summer months there is also a guided walk available for small groups cairngormmountain.org/walking-hiking/…

As qwerty says January is not the time of year for someone to go walking in the Cairngorms unless they are an experienced walker/climber
