I'll be in Edinburgh next month and intend to meet friends ( who all live outside the city) for a casual lunch. Brown's and Bar One in George St have been suggested. Any opinions on which has better food or any other suggestions for a lunch venue? Thanks.

Does it need to be George St? There is Cafe Andaluz, which is fine for sharing tapas and sangria. They do lunch deals. Or what about Tex Mex 2, on nearby Thistle St - again they do lunch deals, and amazing frozen flavoured margaritas. Amazing pork carnitas also!
Or for something a bit different, Hendersons, for flavourful and interesting veggie dishes, both salads and wholesome dishes like hotpot and pies and quiches. It is on Hanover St. Loads more besides, depending on your prefered budget and cuisine.
Nothing wrong with Browns and All Bar One, but they are chain restaurants and there are some great alternatives.

There are some good restaurants in Thistle Street, which runs parallel to George Street - between George Street and Queen Street. We've had a couple of very nice (and not expensive) lunches in Iris, which is in the block between Hanover Street and Frederick Street. http://www.irisedinburgh.co.uk/

Sorry to hijack this thread, but also looking for lunch venue recommendations in the city centre very near Waverly Station. More so for a casual and quick bite to eat (with luggage) and ideally an alcoholic refreshment.
Out of the station (upper level pathway) onto Market Street, over the road, and into the quaintly old-fashioned Doric Tavern. Or there's a cafe in the Fruitmarket Gallery if you turn left on exiting the station.
Centotre on George Street? Isn't that a couple of blocks at least from the station? (Is that an original suggestion or a hijack suggestion?)

Most places in the city centre are within a short stroll to the station. The hijacker I'm sure can manage a short 6 min walk down the hill to the station?
