Having a car in Edinburgh will be a challenge, even if the tram works are finished.

Have a look at the Premier Inn in Morrison Street. There's a car park across the road. The added advantage of staying in the western side of Edinburgh is that you will be on the right side of town to head for St Andrews, Oban and other places like Stirling and the airport

Parking in Edinburgh is difficult and expensive, you need to find somewhere out of the immediate city centre. Are you saying that you are goibng to take your car to The Open? if so that is not a good idea, go by train and bus.

no, not going to have the car for the Open, Not getting the car until the return from Oban on the 24th. But want a car for the first day or 2 that we are in Edinburgh so that we can do some day trips out of the general area.

The two Holiday Inns on the west side of Edinburgh have car parking, and are both on bus routes into the city centre

Cockburn street is a narrow winding street just off the Royal Mile. It has a few metered parking spaces but they are permanently busy if not double-parked. So, OK if you're on foot - foot and bus being the best way to visit the sights.

When you return the following week you will find it a pain to park in the centre of town - but you could pay something like £18/20 per day for off-street parking. If you are prepared to do that your choice of accommodation is pretty much unrestricted.

If travelling to the Open the easiest way is to catch the shuttle service train from Waverley rather than an outlying station. If visiting other places for day trips, then the W side of town makes more sense as others have said.

sounds like we want to find something on the west side. Does anyone have any specific suggestions? We are looking for something that will accomodate 2 adults and 1 teenager. We aren't necessarily looking for budget. We want to be comfortable and be in a nice location. We are all runners, so doing a bit of walking to get around to bus stops, etc is not a problem for us.

Further out, at the Maybury roundabout, which is right on the edge of town there is a Marriott hotel. I haven't stayed there but I've used it to meet people.

There are lots of guest houses and B&Bs in Corstorphine village - but that's probably not what you're after.

Going past the zoo/Holiday Inn and on in to town, there's the Murrayfield Hotel which I know little about having only driven past it.

That's about as far into town as you can go before getting ensnared in parking restrictions or road works.

ANother possibility would be the Queensferry Road which heads NW rather than W. e.g. there's a Holiday Inn at Blackhall on the Queensferry Road.

There are more places nearer town but parking can be difficult. I had friends stay at the Learmonth, Learmonth Terrace, where they managed to park nearby for a few days (This is an old hotel converted to Travelodge) but that's as far as you can go while keeping a car nearby, hassle-free.

[It's possible to park centrally but that's because we residents know lots of little back roads which you wouldn;t find at all easily; and we can shuffle cars about to deter the yellow peril]
