Apartment or Hotel over Hogmanay? |
|
I was hoping to get some advice on picking between Holiday Inn Express or a self-catering apartment. I'll be traveling with my brother, so the thought of being in such cramped quarters as a hotel for a week makes me cringe, but with the exchange rate, so do the prices of the apartments. I've actually found an apartment for 600 GBP for the week. It's in Atholl Crescent Lane, is this an ok area? Thanks in advance everyone! Erica Report as inappropriate |

This is an excellent area to stay in.It is just off Shandwick place in Edinburgh's new town and only a few hundred yards from Princes street where everything takes place. For Hogmany itself you will need a pass for the Princes Street "street Party" and you may be able to get one through the agency who are letting you the apartment. Getting passes can be quite difficult ,even for locals and by this time of year very few are available. The city is very busy at this time of year and prices reflect this, but Atholl Crescent Lane is almost in the heart of things and this reflects in the price. You may get something cheaper if you move away from the city centre.Edinburgh has an excellent bus network (one of the best in the world) and travelling from the outskirts of town will only take a short time. Thanks for the info guys! I sent an email to the Edinburghhogmanay website and got this response: Passes for the Royal Bank Street Party will start to be distributed on October 1 on a first come first served basis with a maximum of 4 per application. You can get them online, by phone, post or in person. Each pass has an admin fee of £2.50. Everyone wishing to attend requires a pass. We do not recommend children under 12. The First Foot Club is being rebranded Edinburgh's Hogmanay Club with two types of membership, Party and Festival membership. There will be 22,0000 Edinburgh's Hogmanay Party memberships at £17.50 each. This includes a Royal Bank Street Party pass and hat and other associated benefits. The Edinburgh's Hogmanay Festival membership is aimed at people who want to get the best from the four day festival. This will cost £45 and will have further enhanced benefits such as access to the bar at the Night Afore International on George Street on 30 December. There will be a VIP area at the street party with entertainment, toilets and bar. There are 3000 Festival memberships. The best way to be kept informed and up to date is to register on the website. We will send out information by email as soon as it becomes available. For accommodation please click on the short-break link from our website. this will take you to the tourism site. Thank you for your interest in Edinburgh's Hogmanay Regards Paul Philip Report as inappropriate

Hi Unclegus and Morjem911! There were free buses I seem to remember last year - they tended to follow the Nightbus routes I think and were free until about 4am. I think - don't quite me on this for the past fww years I've got passes and then at about 10pm decide not to make the long journey (all 20 minutes of it!!) into town from Leith and give them away to a bloke in the pub! Thanks for the info Penguin. 2 of my nephews are coming to visit this Hogmanay and they are now old enough ( 18 & 21 ) to enjoy the festivities ,I am sure they would love the street party even with their old uncle in tow. morjem; I hope you get tickets for the street party,it is a fantastic atmosphere and one i am sure you and your brother will enjoy. Remember there are lots of things going on in Edinbyrgh over this period and the Hogmanay celibrations are the culmination of it all.Let us know if you get tickets for the street party and please enjoy Edinburgh to it's full. morjem911 we visited Edinburgh over the New Year celebrations a few years ago, the weather was freezing so don't forget to bring some warm clothes for your late night partying. Report as inappropriate

Thanks for the advice! Well, I think I'm going to book the apartment. It's through http://www.edinburghself-catering.co.uk Does anyone know anything about them? The lady I've been emailing sounds really nice. I just get so worried staying places that don't have reviews on this site! Report as inappropriate
