Flying from Edinburgh airport

Hello all,

When flying internationally in the US, they recommend you arrive at the airport 2-3 hours ahead of time. What is the recommendation when flying on an 8am flight from Edinburgh to Dublin with a US passport? We will need to return a rental car so how far is the rental facilities from the terminals?

We plan to fly Ryan Air. Do they offer assigned seats or is it free for all? How are the lines fro check in? Do they offer electronic kiosks?

Thanks so much for your help!

2 hours for "domestic" flights,

Free for all is an understatement - think more "1st day of Harrods Sale" unless you've bought "priority boarding",

For Ryanair it won't be so bad as they only do 2 routes though security will be busy at that time of the day,

No electronic kiosks and as you aren't EU you can't checkin online

Remember that Ryanair's checkin closes PRECISELY 40 minutes before the timetabled departure time, if you aren't checked in by then you don't fly. If you have bags to check then ensure that you buy the correct number of bags at time of booking as they charge double at the airport.

And watch the weight & size limits for luggage - 15kg for checked & 10kg for carryon plus a carryon size that is substantially smaller than the standard. Exceed them and Ryanair WILL charge you massive excess baggage fees and may require you to check further bags

And Edinburgh is stricter than most airports when it comes to one bag carry on policy!

Actually, the RyanAir website says nothing about non-EU nationals not being able to check in online. Usually it's not a problem unless your passport is about to expire or has been renewed recently. But you can't check in online if you are checking bags.

<<< Online check-in can be used by passengers travelling with hand luggage ONLY, presenting a valid EU/EEA passport or a valid Government issued EEA National Identity Card, matching the document details printed on their Check N'Go boarding pass, at both airport security and the departure gate. (See paragraph headed “Documentation" in our Terms and Conditions for details of accepted European Economic Area (EEA) National Identity Cards). >>>
