Florida USA to move to Aberdeen, Scotland

I have an opportuntiy to work for an oil company off Aberdeen.

I will be new, and have never been out of the USA, does anyone have any good advise as to what to do and what to avoid.

Areas, and such like that.

One of my neighbours works off-shore, & he flies down to Southampton from Aberdeen & back regularly.

Means he gets the benefit of our marginally milder climate, no midgies & can see his friends & family.

From your hobbies I think Aberdeen would be perfect for you. I dont know why everyone puts Aberdeen down as it is a fantastic city and its strange to note that the people who seem to appreciate it most are people who have moved here from elsewhere. Within minutes of driving from the city you are in stunning countryside and there is miles and miles of beach albeit it can be chilly but excellent for kite surfing etc.

I would at least give Aberdeen a go and stay here for a year or so and give it a chance. get involved in things and you will really enjoy it. I see the post is a month old so if you want more advice as to where to buy house or rent etc then get in touch, happy to help

I spent 10 days in the North East of Scotland and can't wait to get back, I am on the Outer Banks of NC.

Bring your bike & gear, your time off, spend it traveling all over Scotland and Ireland. You never know when you will ever get back, if ever. Bring your camera as well, breath taking views evertime you turn around.

There is a B&B in Kemnay, just 10 minutes outside of Aberdeen, Boatley's Farm, Gill & Murdo Adam are great hosts, I highly recommend it! We stayed there as our base camp.

Summer in Aberdeen is somewhat cooler than winter in Florida. Days are around 65 and evenings around 45. The wind blows constantly and usually rains almost every other day most times just a little.

You will lvoe Scotland and the people are very friendly.

Are you sure your rota will be 28/28? On and offshore installation in the UKCS you will only be allowed be be offshore for 21 days.

I would suggest you stay somewhere else if working offshore. The heliport for Bond/Scotia/Bristows shares a runway with Aberdeen Airport and fixed wings from Scatsta return there so you can get flight to hubs such as london or amsterdam very easily - your work might even pay for your flight or at worst a second class rail fare to anywhere in UK.

I would say it's will be quite difficult making friends in Aberdeen if you work offshore. As most of the guys that work offshore don't live in Aberdeen (Most are from Teeside in England or scattered around Scotland and England or even quite a few in Spain). It is easier building up a social network if you are office based and have a partner.

Aberdeen is not the friendliest city and is fairly dead during the week for socialising. Winter is also fairly bleak with short days and poor weather and very little in the way of activities to do - especially if you're on your own.

Scottish humour could be hard for someone else to understand.
