Places to stop between Cardiff and London?

Hi all,

We wanted to drive over to Cardiff this weekend from London and were hoping for some sites along the way that might be worth stopping at. Any historic homes or anything of note? We could make it a side trip on the way back. Perhaps leaving Cardiff early, heading towards mystery spot, spending a couple of hours and then heading back to London. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

I'd suggest you stop at Bath on the way over to Cardiff and after an early start, take in Windsor on the way home.

Chepstow Castle, Tintern Abbey, Berkeley Castle, SS Great Britain in Bristol, Glastonbury Abbey & Tor, Wells Cathedral & Bishop's Palace, Lacock, Castle Combe, Bowood House & Gardens. And that's less than half way back to London.

Good list, Ron, but it starts (pretty much) at the English border. Tredegar House (Wales' only true country house in the south), Caerleon and Caerwent are all only a mile or two off the road back to London.

If you are looking for a more direct route home from Bath, the old A4 goes through some nice places - Chippenham and Marlborough, for instance, with various manor houses to visit or even stop over at. Alternatively, you could work your way north of the line of the M4 through the Forest of Dean and the Cotswolds. Umpteen things to do on all these routes!

I'd second the suggestion of Chepstow castle (although you probably won't have time to do a tour) and/or the short drive from there (15 minutes) up the Wye valley to Tintern to see the Tintern Abbey ruins. Several places there to have a tea/coffee/cake break and a couple of arty/craft shops at the Abbey Mill for gifts/souvenirs. The valley is looking beautiful right now with the trees just coming into leaf.

Caernarfon and Snowdonia are in no way en route from Cardiff to London!

It's ok he's going up the M1, crossing over to Liverpool and hitting Wales from that direction. He'll pass Snowdonia before he hits Cardiff! :-)

Going via the A4, M4, I think Bath would be a very good place to chill out on the journey. You could spend many an hour there easily. Only problem with running along the A4 is traffic. Not that the M4 doesn't suffer at times.

The first place that sprung to mind was the atmospheric Caerleon Roman Fort and Amphitheatre, not just because its a real gem of a place that often gets overlooked, but because its not too far off the motorway, as it Tredegar House the home of my ancestors and venue of many an episode of Doctor Who (unecessary wee factoid there). Bath deserves a lot longer than a stop off and perhaps is a place for another day. You could spend an awfuly lot of time there just trying to park the car.
