Pub lunch en route

Hiya,

My hubby and I will be driving up to Arthog, Gwynedd next Friday and plan to go via the Severn Bridge and Brecon Beacons.

We are hoping to stop for lunch, and having been to the Gurnard's Head at Zennor before we thought we might stop at the Felin Fach Griffin. I have had a look at the reviews on here but many are looking at the accommodation rather than the food. Just wondering if anyone can recommend anywhere nicer or whether you'd stick with Felin Fach Griffin?

Many thanks!

Had a very nice lunch at a pub called The Griffin at Llyswen, which is near Felinfach. It is on the junctin of the A470 & A479 between Brecon & Builth Wells

I can recommend The Rhydspence Inn at Whitney on Wye. We have eaten there about six times, with no complaints at all.

Mrs J and I were both born and brought up in the Usk valley and family matters regularly bring us "home" for a week or two. This happens to be one of those weeks, and we were looking for lunch near Brecon yesterday. For many many years, the Griffin at Llyswen, mentioned by EdinaCloud, has had a very high reputation locally but that of the Griffin at Felinfach has steadily risen to match, so we decided to give it a try on this occasion. I'll add a review, but the bottom line is that it was excellent. That said, the experience was not so much "pub lunch" as "un-stuffy fine dining at lunchtime"; the Griffin at Llyswen might perhaps be characterised as offering more of a "country pub serving excellent food" atmosphere. You couldn't possibly go wrong with either.

By the way, don't forget that the Ryder Cup is expected to cause huge disruption in the Newport area over the next few days. The centre is Coldra Hall (now "the Celtic Manor") at the M4/449 junction. It might make sense to cross the "old" Severn Bridge to Chepstow and follow the Wye up to Monmouth, then along the A40 to Brecon.

Many thanks all - very helpful. Also big thanks for the Ryder Cup mention John as I wouldn't have thought of that at all!

Never been to the Griffin, but as an alternative I can thoroughly recommend the Bear at Crickhowell
