Suggestions for Interesting Places to visit around Salisbury

We are a group of five with three teenage boys. We are traveling to Salisbury by train from Southampton and will be taking a tour around Stonehenge and environs, then plan to see Salisbury including Cathedral. We have another day and night and am wondering what other fun places to see. We are considering Lacock, or Castle Combe and Cotswolds, but am wondering if that is too much. If it's convenient, we might rent a car in Salisbury to tour around the villages. Would love any suggestions or ideas. We have not booked places to stay, but am interested in historic inns or hotels.

Journeying to places like Lacock, Castle Combe and the Cotswold villages would be better in a car. The initial journey to the Cotswold region from Salisbury will be over an hour to begin with.

Locally you could take a short bus ride to Wilton House.

If you do decide to hire a car, a nice drive is from Salisbury to Shaftesbury. A really interesting place along this route is Fovant where there are several regimental badges carved into the hillside

Shaftesbury is a very pretty little town, famous for its Gold Hill which was used in a UK television advertising campaign for Hovis bread!!

If you;re from Southampton, you may well have done it already, but if not........how about Beaulieu? As well as the racing cars, motorbikes, vintage cars etc, there's also a Top Gear exhibition there.

There's also the Steam Museum in Swindon, right next door to the Outlet shopping centre.

You could take the bus to Bournemouth (X3 I think) and see a typical British seaside resort. Plenty of hotels or B & B's to stay in.

Then if you are going back to Southampton you can take the train.

Hi

A few more ideas - all within 40 miles of Salisbury

Bovington tank museum

Corfe Castle

Poole - for the ferry to Brownsea Island.

However if you did decide on Lacock I would also stop at Avebury and see the stones there.

There is also the New Forest within a reasonable drive from Salisbury - the ponies, cattle etc. roam free within the forest boundaries and the scenery is great. Some nice pubs and Inns too. The earlier suggestion about Beaulieu is a good one if you have teenage boys as they will enjoy the Motor Museum. I don't know what date you are coming but there is also a Supercars show on at Wilton House on Sunday 14 August. For historic Hotels there are two right in the centre of Salisbury - The Red Lion and The White Hart. Being local, I haven't stayed in either but no doubt you will be able to find some reviews.

I was in Salisbury last year for a week.

One of the highlights was Old Wardour Castle.

We had 5 kids with us (two families) and every one loved this little castle.

Of all the castles I've visited this one was the most fun... You could easily combine his with Shaftsbury as they are quite close by. You could probably do both in a morning if you got a reasonably early start.

The boys would also enjoy the Motor Museum at Beaulieu. It's a good bet for a rainy day.

Both of these would probably need a car. But they're in the opposite direction so you couldn't combine them...

Yet another vote here for Beaulieu. There is much more there than the Motor Museum. Check the website others have linked to. We rented a car the day we went to Beaulieu. After spending the morning at Beaulieu, we drove through the New Forest to Buckler's Hard. It's on the Beaulieu River closer to the sea. Cute little village where Admiral Lord Nelson's ships were built 200 years ago. There is a path through the woods that follows the river back up to Beaulieu.
