@ Mauser77 - Oxford has an historic and compact City Centre that is not suited to unrestricted use of private cars. If you want somewhere that is, try Milton Keynes.

I didnt ask for anywhere that had unrestricted use of cars, just a coaching inn!

Just to say that Oxford AJRs recommendations are sound - and PoolLounger's comments on accessibility of the city centre is also accurate. One thing you need to be careful of in Oxford when driving round is that there are "bus gates" - which restrict access to buses - and are monitored by cameras. I have seen a number of tourist cars happily driving up the High Street during the day ignoring the signs and oblivious to the fact that a fine will be automatically finding it's way to their home address. Details here if you need oxfordshire.gov.uk/cms/content/bus-lane-enfo…

We have bus lanes in Plymouth too, so we are used to them.

No, pcw12kcox is not referring to bus 'lanes', but bus 'gates'. These are virtual gates and when you pass a certain point, your number plate is registered and you are fined. You need to look out for the signs as they are easy to miss.

Lalli, that old coaching inn you stayed in years ago may have been the Golden Cross in Cornmarket.

Very Dickensian, but now unfortunately it has closed and the courtyard has been taken over by the touristy type shops that have spoiled the adjacent market as well.

Before anybody else says anything about the market, yes it is still original in many parts with some wonderful original food shops but the march of the shops pampering to the tourist is relentless.

I would recommend a lovely 13th Century inn, in the picturesque village of Woodstock, just 20 minutes’ drive from Oxford centre, The Bear Hotel,

I see from your other post that you are big fans of Morse and Film sets, The Bear Hotel has been home to royals and film stars, including Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton, although not actually used in filming.

Oh and to finish off the magnificent Blenheim Palace, Birth place or Winston Churchill is just at your doorstep.

Hope this helps.
