I want to get from Stonehenge to Oxford using public transportation. Is this possible?

It is. You will need to get a train from Oxford to Basingstoke (operated by Arriva Cross Country), then a train from Basingstoke to Salisbury. Use www.thetrainline.com to look up times and fares.

At Salisbury there is a bus tour which leaves from outside the station. This is the only public transport that runs to Stonehenge, and it also stops at Old Sarum and in Salisbury centre (for the Cathedral). Prices range from £11 for the bus tour only, £18 for bus and admission to Stonehenge and Old Sarum, or £22 including Salisbury Cathedral as well (reductions for children and some small discounts for students). Check the times as the freqency reduces from 1st September. http://www.thestonehengetour.info

Yes - bus to Salisbury then train, changing at Basingstoke and sometimes Reading as well

Sorry - didn't read your original post properly. It's still possible, just take the stages in reverse.

So, will we need to go from Stonehenge to Salisbury? We are staying in Oxford on the 4th.

We were going to take either a MadMax or Scarper tour.

Now I didn't find any suitable information on their websites, but are you sure you can use any of the tours to Stonehenge and then NOT return back to Bath? I do know some tour operators that won't return until all passengers are back on the bus. So if you aren't on the bus back to Bath, it may cause some trouble.

Either way, it must be easier to travel from Bath to Oxford (with a change in Didcot Parkway, if you travel by train. Not sure about buses).

It's looking like that's what we will have to do.

That would certainly be the best way - there is no ordinary public transport that serves Stonehenge - only the rather expensive tour bus.
