Hadrians Wall

I want to see Hadrians wall and was thinking of taking a train to Hexham for a night. Can I get to the wall on my own or from a bus from the town center? I won't have a car and will be coming in by train.

The AD122 Hadrian's Wall bus stops running at the end of October so if you are planning a visit in November you'll be out of luck. Also opening hours at many of the forts are reduced after the end of October so check the English Heritage site for details.

To access the Wall by bus from Hexham your best bet is probably the Snaiths 880 or 882 (not very frequent) which picks up outside Hexham Station and will take you to Brunton crossroads, which is near Brunton Turret (free access).

It's also about 15 minutes walk from there to Chesters fort (only open at weekends after October). You pass the abutment of the Roman bridge across the North Tyne along the way.

If you want to visit a fort Segedunum http://www.twmuseums.org.uk/segedunum/ is open on weekdays and is easily accessible by metro to Wallsend.

Although it isn't actually on the Wall Corbridge Roman Town is also open at weekends and can be accessed by train to Corbridge or bus from Hexham (685). It's about a mile from the station.

Another option is to get the hourly 685 bus .

arrivabus.co.uk/uploadedfiles/Services/North… from either Hexham or Haltwhistle to Greenhead, which is within walking distance of quite a decent section of Wall. The bus stops on the main A69 road so you will need to get off there and walk into the village first. You can also walk to the Roman Army Museum (about a mile away), which is open every day until November 13th (after that it's closed until February) http://www.vindolanda.com/Roman-Army-Museum

If you walk a bit further you will come to an impressive part where the Wall runs along Walltown Crags.

Catch the train to Haltwhistle. You can walk up Haltwhistle Burn (delightful walk) to the military road at the Milecastle Inn and then follow the road (rather than the footpath along the burn) to Cawfields Quarry. There is access to the Roman Wall here. The walk east along the wall is great with superb views. There is the remains of a milecastle and also turrets. The wall is 2-3' high. It is also easy walking. It may be a bit muddy at Caw Gap if the farmer is feeding the cows in the field.

You can get a pdf with a map and directions here:

www.google.co.uk/url…

If this doesn't work put Haltwhistle Burn Walk into google. It came up top of the list for me.

I would suggest you return by walking back along the wall to Cawfields Quarry. The route in the pdf drops down through rough grassland and can be wet in winter.

This is one of my favourite short walks along the wall and it is the easiest to reach under your own steam.

It is also possible to walk west along the wall. This brings you to the remains of a Roman Fort (another Chesters) but there isn't a lot to be seen. The walk eventually brings you to Walltown Crags which has some of the best preserved remains of the wall, and to the road to the Roman Army museum in the above post.
