I would do quite a lot of walking, cheap but filling lunch, one museum. You don't say if you already know London. The clip below is courtesy of Mick67 and this portion of it takes in a lot of sights along the way. "At Charing Cross turn left and you'll see Trafalgar Square. From here walk down Whitehall, passing Horse Guards, Downing Street and the Centotaph and you will reach Parliament Square with Big Ben, Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey. From here, walk across Westminster Bridge and you'll see the London Eye. Also some nice views of Parliament and Big Ben from the bridge. At the south side of the bridge, turn left down the steps towards the London Eye. This path will take you along the Thames and there will plenty of places to stop and rest or have a drink or something to eat. You will get great views of St Paul's and the City as you walk round and will also pass The Globe theatre. Before you get to London Bridge, you will see a replica of the Golden Hind and you will have to walk around some little alleys, passing the Clink museum, Borough market and Southwark Cathredral. From Southwark Cathredral, there are steps that take you up to London Bridge, cross over at the traffic lights and get back to the path along the Thames. You will walk pass Hays Galleria, HMS Belfast, City Hall and you will see Tower Bridge and Tower of London. Walk pass Tower Bridge and take a short walk down Shad Thames. it's a nice street but you get to see the old warehouses. Turn left at the end so you are back by the river and walk towards Tower Bridge." The entire walk is too long for one day, I think, and you should take in a museum. They are virtually all free. There are websites in the sticky at the top of the beginning of this forum. A nice pub lunch or, if you don't like going in to one to eat alone, check out all the places in central London to have egg/bacon/chips/beans on …typepad.com/eggbaconchipsandbeans/ The museum could be one of many. If you do the Tate Modern you can cross the Millenium Bridge back to the city (more walking!), work your way up to Cornhill visiting the little alleys and lanes of the City. (Funny URL but it connects you). www.geocities.com/TheTropics/Cabana/9424/ I am sure there will be many more suggestions. Enjoy your day out wherever you go. Report as inappropriate

Go on an open top bus tour, take a trip on the River Thames and go on the London Eye (if the queues/lines aren't too long). If you don't mind being on your own, I'd also suggest visiting a nice old pub and seeing a show - but it might not be as much fun on your own. As you may know, London is huge and you can't hope to do any more than scratch the surface in a day - but you'll have it all to look forward to on your next trip. Report as inappropriate

There is a website about *free things to do in London* - on it there is a link I think to seeing london by bus - you buy a day rover bus ticket for something like £3.50 and the guy has given a comprehensive list of the buses and stops and what you will see enroute. You can get on and off at any time to visit sites etc. Sounds good if the weather is awful. :0) Report as inappropriate

Jilly - if you decide to do the London Eye, I believe you can get tickets ahead of time, diminishing your wait. Report as inappropriate

Jillian, Are you a shopper? If so, you may want to hit the stores for the January sales. Work clothes for the new job you're going to get, no? ; ) Report as inappropriate

How come no one ever mentions hanging out with HRH Elizabeth Windsor? Get yourself a guest invite to a garden party and clink tea cups with the Royals. Report as inappropriate

It really depends on what interests you. If I only had one day I would probably squeeze in Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London and spend time in a pub in the evening or do a walk from www.walks.com. Of course this would be a complete waste of time if history and old buildings did nothing for you! The walk suggested above is an excellent suggestion. Report as inappropriate
