Ok, this is going to sound crazy, but here goes with my travel ideas.
Our daughter is studying in London this semester, and my husband, youngest daughter, and myself are traveling to the area, arriving on 19 Nov. in the morning at Gatwick airport. When we arrive, our college daugher will be in Ireland with a friend, returning on Monday.
So, I thought that we could rent a car at Gatwick, drive down to Lewes and see the Castle and Ann of Cleves House on Saturday. On Sunday, I'd like to see Brighton's Royal Pavilion, and perhaps Preston Manor? I thought we'd then drive up north towards London, and see Hampton Court Palace on Monday morning, while we still have the car.
Now, rather than returning the car to Gatwick, and taking a 45 min. ride to Kings Cross Station, can someone advise me of a closer place to drop off the car. Alamo offers free "one way" rentals, and I thought it would be worth checking out.
If you have any other sightseeing ideas, or if you do think I am crazy, please let me know.
We will then spend 3 days in London. On Thursday, we plan to travel east with both daughters. I'd like to see Rochester, down to Leeds Castle, down to Bodiam Castle, up to Tonbridge Castle and finally, Hever Castle. I have become painfully aware that most other places are closed in late November.
Regarding this trip, I would like to end at Gatwick airport, since we will be flying out of there.
But, is it worth the time for us to travel all the way to Gatwick to pick up another car?
Does anyone think it would be better for me just to rent the car for the entire time, and find a place to keep it while we are in London? I noticed that alot of the B&B's near Gatwick offer car watching for a minimal fee, but that would still entail us traveling back and forth from gatwick to King's Cross Station, which is near our London destination.
Thanks so much in advance for any help.
