There is only one place to be and that's Keswick! :p
Seriously, if you fancy a left field suggestion that will be very quiet but spectacularly scenic (why a first timer who is a tourist would not want to go the places a tourist would normally go is a bit of a mystery to me - a bit like saying I'm going to New York and having people telling me to avoid The Empire State Building, Times Square etc because they're tourist traps. But that's another conversation, where is this suggestion?
Well it's the far side of the most beautiful lake in the area, Ullswater. You get there via Pooley Bridge and then follow the road down the east side. It has a few hairpins at the top and you'll get magnificent views from there (Hallin Fell). There is a bench overlooking the lake and the hairpins in the road and its beautifully quiet - though maybe not so much now!
You can drive further uphill and go to Martindale where there is a church.
