We (two couples) have just returned from a very enjoyable holiday. We first visited this island in the 1960s courtesy of a friend who had a PPL and access to a small aircraft and a friend who owned a cottage in Le Bourgage. We had many visits over several years during which we enjoyed exploring the island and relaxing on the beach during the day and chatting with locals in the pubs in the evenings.
Marriage, children and work followed but finally the decision was made to revisit a place we had enjoyed so much in our late teens/early 20s but this time we had to rely on commercial flights and paid for accommodation.
We travelled mid week on the cheapest option offered by Aurigny and after many years of travelling on large passenger aircraft it was interesting to us all to fly on such a small, noisy aircraft once again.
We managed to rent the cottage right next door to where we had previously stayed over 50 years ago -so much nicer than staying in B & B and hotels where you need to conform. Somewhere to flop, after a long day out, for a short rest before deciding where to go for an evening meal was what was required. The cottage had everything we needed including jigsaws, books, cds and videos in case the weather was inclement.
Our intention was to walk the coastline so we collected all the walks leaflets offered by the Tourist Office to make sure that we did not miss out anything and thoroughly enjoyed the scenery, bird life and exploring all the fortifications we could get into. The weather was kind to us too.
It was sad to see so many empty properties, both residential and business and to see so few visitors about generally. By 9.30 pm when the restaurants shut even the pubs were empty!
The island is expensive if you are used to the prices which are available on the mainland but this is no reason to stay away from such a lovely place. A cost of a week here is only the same as a foreign holiday.
To enjoy this island fully you need to be able to walk easily so as to appreciate the lovely scenery - the beaches are beautiful and quiet. There is not a lot of night life here but not everyone wants that anyway. A lovely meal in one of the restaurants is more than enough to end a good day.
The holiday brought back so many happy memories and we look forward to returning again.
