Can one drive from Vancouver, B.C to Waterton Lakes NP ?

We are planning our summer vacation this summer 2011 and need some advise from the past and frequent travellers.

First leg - Seattle to Vancouver --> Whistler --> Vancouver (2 nights)

Second Leg - We then plan to drive to the Glacier National Park / Waterton Lakes National Park and not sure if we need to come down to Seattle again for the drive to the GNP or could we drive from Vancouver to the parks since both of them are so close.

Also, if someone could recommend the number of days to cover both the parks on the US and Canadian side.

Since the drive from either Vancouver or Seattle could be long one with the young kids, where would be the best place to have a break journey for a Night ?

Leg 3 - Drive down from Glacier National Park to Seattle via Spokane and then fly back to our home.

thanks everyone for helping in our vacation plans.

most would drive to Glacier from Banff or the Calgary area then down into Montana. Without knowing your itinerary in the Rockies its hard to comment. I suggest you look at some itineraries for the rockies then use that as a rough draft. Globus.com caravan.com all do Rockies to Glacier itineraries. You can use that as a guide.

From Vancouver take The Trans Canada Hwy 1 east to Hope BC, then Hwy 3 (The Crowsnest) to Elko BC. Road is very winding, but goes through some interesting towns and several summits along BC's southern border. Then go south from Elko BC along Hwy 93 and cross the border into Montana and then on to Glacier National Park. Waterton Park is an easy day trip from from Glacier if want to also go there.

You don't need to go through Seattle. You can follow the route suggested by Rundleskinny but then you have to backtrack to Waterton. If you'd prefer to hit Waterton first keep driving east on Hwy #3 to Pincher Creek and then turn south onto highway 6. That will take you to Waterton and, after you've spent some time there, on to Glacier.

I can't suggest how many days. I like to go and spend a week or more in Waterton but others may not.
