3 days in the banff and lake louise area help

Must arrive in Edmonton due to business Friday late. Wondering if its possible to drive from Edmonton to Jasper and down the ice field parkway Saturday to stay at Emerald Lake? Sunday, second day see Lake Louise and Banff, returning back to Emerald Lake for the night. Monday need to be back in Edmonton by noon. too much? would appreciate any suggestion as have never been to the area.

Well, it would be little more than a drive-by. IMHO, this area is always 'worth it', but it would be frustrating for you because you will finish with the clear knowledge that you will need to return and see it properly. If this was a dedicated trip, then I would try to talk you into rearranging things so that you could spend more time, but as you are going to be in Edmonton anyway, then I'd say - heck yeah! What month? The other concern is weather, which is always variable in the mountains. When you are there for a week, you have good odds of seeing it in fine weather, but with only a day or two, you could have the entire time without a single mountain peak in view. That's the risk.

Thanks for the quick response. It's a last minute business trip to Edmonton, start work Tuesday and thought we would go up as early as we could ,which is tomorrow . A drive by is a good analogy. Since we are from Texas had no idea winterish weather was stll a possibility. Booked at emerald lake area for two nights . If you think of any must do's in the Edmonton, jasper , emerald lake, Calgary back to Edmonton loop and have a minute it would be appreciated. Looking forward to seeing the area and sure we will want to return. Thanks

Tomorrow! Ok, yes, that's early season still. Warm coats in order! Probably still some roadside snow in the shade. Those mountains are always beautiful (provided you can see them) and spectacular. It will be a rush, but you can see what it looks like and start planning for a real trip to the area in the future.

It's a four hour drive from Edmonton to Jasper, and then about 3 to 3.5 to Emerald Lake, via the Icefields Parkway (highway 93). We usually recommend spending the whole day on the parkway drive, since there are so many viewpoints, lakes, waterfalls and the Columbia Icefields to stop at. So I think you will want an early start! The parkway goes up to higher elevations (two passes are almost at 7000 feet), and yes, it is still winter up there (or very early spring). The high glacial lakes are still ice-covered, and some of the roadside pull-outs may not yet be accessible.

Driving back to Edmonton, you may want to check if it is any faster to exit off the parkway at highway 11 to Rocky Mountain House, and then take highway 2 back to Edmonton. www.maps.google.com - the "directions" feature will give you mileages and estimated driving times.

Krp329 hope this isn't a second post in response to your great input but didn't see my response so trying again. Wanted to thank you for the info on the driving times. A little longer than expected but as you suggested we are going to get an early start and try to " cram in as much as we can". Hopefully we will get to see and stop at some of the sights and return to the area with more time. Appreciate your assistance
