Canmore week of Oct 20-27.

Is this an okay time to visit Canmore? I read in some of the post that it is a slower time of the year, but also a beautiful time. Suggestions on things to do, places to visit? We will be renting a car. We are a couple in our late 40's. We love to bike, hike, run. Would like ideas for day trips as well. Temperature in Oct.? Thanks in adviance

1. Re: Canmore week of Oct 20-27.

Late October is sort of the last gasp of fall. Here in Calgary, the first snowfall of winter (the first one that isn't melted off a day or three later) is generally at the very end of October or start of November (think Halloween). Canmore and Banff are at higher elevations, so they might be moving into winter a bit sooner.

This is why the accommodation rates are so low at this time of year - too cold to hike, too early to ski. Most hiking trails are closed due to snow, and the Moraine Lake road generally closes around the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend (Thanksgiving is Oct 8 in 2012).

You should still be able to enjoy cycling the Legacy Trail between Canmore and Banff, barring recent snowfalls, and other hiking trails such as Fenland Trail, Tunnel Mountain, Lake Louise Lakeshore, and Johnston Canyon should still be accessible.

Kananaskis Country is at a slightly lower elevation from Banff and may be a better destination for hiking and cycling at this time of year. Canmore is the most convenient town to K-Country. You might start with Bow Valley Provincial Park, a part of K-Country immediately next to Hwy 1 east of Canmore and Dead Man's Flats.

But the weather could be a nasty shock for a couple of Texans. Here is a link to Environment Canada's climate data for Banff (they don't have Canmore data); you can select the months that you view so that you're just looking at Oct and Nov:

if you want to do the typical tourist things I think you'll find many things are closed. The Ice Explorer, Maligne Lk Cruise, some roads etc. Go before Cdn Thanksgiving. I've been often in late Sept early october. Weather in fine but freezing at nite and in the morning but generally ok in the daytime.
