People either like (or hate) Reno.....
If into gambling, the casinos there are much nicer than the ones at South Lake Tahoe....
El Dorado Casino almost always has a fun show going on in their smaller theater - and we've enjoyed sevearl shows there.
If on the week-end, there are usually headliner shows going on at the
Buffets are better; nice restaurants; more going on.
If you are into cars, Harrahs automobile museum if great.
It has a ton of fun summer activities - for August Hot August Nights is one of the top events in the area
When will you be there in August?
Also, there is a lot of smaller local events - things you need to look for and enjoy......
We've enjoyed such things as Greek Festivals (lots of fun and great food); cowboy poetry and fun pre-show barbecue at Bartley Ranch Park
There is a nice park just north of the casino area by the University of Nevada at reno
a fun small museum to visit there is: Wilbur D. May Museum
This is also where the fun balloon festival is held each September (yeah - past the time you are here) - its the same week as the air show in Reno.
There is also a 3 story art museum - there are also special free events here
And for minor league baseball and minor league basketball, Reno is so much fun.....
The Reno Aces is a great place to have a game, enjoy baseball food; and soak in the sun.....
lots of fun features.
Reno is NOT a place to just show up and think you can figure out what to do....its a place to plan in advance and there is always so much fun going on .....if you are willing to look for it in advance. The Reno Gazette newspaper has a good entertainment calendar if you want to check what is going on when you are there in August (best to check a month or so in advance to see the latest - now is a bit early). We've seen fun shows at their Pioneer Center such as BlueMan Group, etc.
And by the way, you might want to post this same question in Nevada Forum - Reno - as it is Reno.
By the way, shopping is fun in Nevada as well - south of town is The Summit
There are also beer crawls and lots more - but its a place to discover, enjoy and savor
and many who say "nah" are those who just showed up and did not plan....
and did not discover the local events; the fun things to do; the hidden gems of the area.
Its sad when people just say no - and say they cannot find a place when there are so many friendly locals there.
By the way, it would be quite easy to do a day trip that included both Virginia City and Reno on the same day....
we're looking forward to our soon vacation to Reno/Lake Tahoe and they both are fun to visit.
