Aussie family of 5 needing transport to South Lake Tahoe

Hi, we are a family of 5 who have booked accommodation at Marriott grand Residences in heavenly for 5 nights in December 2013.I would be great full for any advise on transport options from San Francisco to heavenly village SLT.I know flying is an option but wondered what other options were available. On returning to San Fransisco we are flying out that night so need a reliable option for transport that will get us back on time. any advise would be greatly appreciated.Does any one know if the Bay Area ski bus does transport only ? Thanks

The best option is to rent a vehicle and make the drive yourself. It will only take about 4 hours depending upon weather conditions. Ideally you should rent an all wheel or 4 wheel drive in case chain controls are up.

I suspect you do not want to drive yourself? The options are not so good. Amtrak California can get you there, but it uses a combination of bus and train on the route. You can also fly to Reno and use the south lake tahoe shuttle, but with 5 in your group that can get costly. You could also rent a vehicle in Reno and make the short drive.

I don't know anything about the bay area ski bus, so hopefully someone else has information on that option.

Thank you for your quick reply. We will look at both options, fly in and use shuttle or use Amtrak train/ bus service. Thanks

http://www.bayareaskibus.com/ check with them but it is too early to book Dec 13

The Train takes about 6-7 hours and is delayed at times.

Renting a car is the only way to go honestly. As a concierge I answer this question almost daily. The amtrak bus only runs it's route once per day and it not very convenient.

As far as car rentals are concerned, I am sure that SFO has a plethora of options. I would however suggest Hertz, Avis, or Enterprise. These are the only three that have locations here in South Lake Tahoe. I say this because if there is ever an issue with your car and need to switch it out it is better to be safe than sorry. :)

One thing to think about is that during a big snowstorm the roads can close temporarily and chains, or no chains, you can't get through. If you want to make sure you will be spending your entire vacation at Tahoe and that you will get back to SF in time for your return flight, you should really fly into Reno and fly back to SF from Reno. You can rent a car in Reno for getting to and from Tahoe.

Fly to Reno. There is a casino shuttle you can take. The Marriott residences are just across the street.

Fly to Reno. We do it twice a year. Easy airport to navigate. I'd rent a car and drive over to SLT so that you have transportation for restaurants and sights.

I would recommend flying to Reno only because of potential weather comlications. You never know what is going to happen and if the weather turns nasty you will want to be on that Reno shuttle which is equipped with travelling in the snow. Your vacation would continue without a hitch and you will arrive in South Shore ready for powder days!

I would imagine the cost to Reno is more but for me it would be worth it for peace of mind.

Driving from SF is complicated if you are in a rental and then need chains to get over the pass. If the weather is clear then it is no big deal to rent the car but with planning requirements you can not count on weather. We have had back to back mild winters if that means anything what-so-ever.

Best of luck!
