7 nights stay in Lake Tahoe / Reno - thoughts please...

Hi

We are planning on taking a holiday to Lake Tahoe and surrounding places in September and would really like some advice on where and how long we should stay in each place

Initial thoughts are fly to San Fran (from UK) for one night (we have been before, great city) then drive to South Lake Tahoe for 4-5 nights then 2-3 Reno

We love the outdoors and good food !

This is our first time to SLT and would really appreciate any advice of length and where to stay

we are open to all suggestions and if there are any other places we should consider too

many thanks

You didn't mention your lodging budget, but we love the Hyatt Hotel in Incline Village on the north shore.

…hyatt.com/hyatt/hotels-laketahoe/index.jsp…

They are located at the lake, and the Lone Eagle Grill, their restaurant is fine dining with beautiful sunsets over the lake. Since they are on the NV side of the lake, they have a casino off the hotel lobby. There is a beautiful swimming pool and Stillwater Spa for massages.

Just across the street from the Hyatt are some excellent restaurants, or a mile up the hill is Blue Water Grill, or Soul Domaine in King's Beach.

They are located 25 minutes from SLT where there are about 5 other casinos, or 45 minutes over the Mt. Rose Hwy. to Reno.

You say you've never been to South Lake Tahoe before, have you been to North Lake Tahoe before?

You say you love the outdoors and good food, are you gamblers?

South Lake has the bigger casinos, but I find the North Lake more picturesque. I agree with CAnative that the Hyatt in Incline Village is a great place. There are also nice smaller towns to visit like Truckee, Tahoe City and Tahoe Vista.

The Pfeifer House is one of my favorite restaurants in Lake Tahoe, Christy Hill is another.

Given that we're headed to South lake Tahoe/Reno for 7 days, I would say your time there is just right....

however since you are coming from so far, its up to you if you want to spend your time that way. I like your split of time - I would do such things as a lake cruise, hikes, do visit the casinos (if only for one night), and enjoy eating out.

A few places I like are

Reserve at Edgewood

Evans

With a car, I would do a day drive to see Caples Lake, have lunch at Sorensens, and then do an afternoon soak at Grover Hot Springs

Also be sure to include a visit to Virgnia City while there...

If you like basque food - drive over to Carson Valley and go to JTs

In regards to specific places to stay we like the Marriott in Tahoe and in Reno, we usually stay at one of the casino hotels as the rates are great - Peppermill, Atlantis, or El Dorado

http://www.peppermillreno.com/

http://www.atlantiscasino.com/

http://www.eldoradoreno.com/

In Reno, try to time it for the week-end as the local festivals take place on the week-ends (their biggest ones are such things as barbecue festivals, rodeos, Hot August Nights (cars), and more - it all depends when you are there if you are lucky to synch up with a festival.

For eats, the buffet at the El Dorado is quite good, Roxys at the El Dorado is good; or for tapa like appetizers with wine/drinks the happy hour deal from 4-6 at the Atlantis is a very good deal to go to.

If interested in seeing a show while in Reno

Silver Legacy usually has a name person/group on the weekends.

El Dorado usually has a fun show going on in their small but nice theater.

Harrahs usually has some group playing.

These 3 usually have the most in entertainment but check the Reno Entertainment Calendar (Reno Gazette their newspaper) usually has a good listing. Once in reno, they have free newspapers at the casinos listing all the activities going on.

In my opinion, I think 3 nights in Reno is about 2 too many, given your likes of "outdoors and good food", Besides gambling and shows, the town has only a moderate amount of charm- it is quite suburban in nature, and pretty tacky. You'd be better off waking up in Tahoe and getting over to Reno for a day out or a night in.

By the way, if you like to read, a wonderful book by Mark Twain would give you a flavor of the silver-mining days in Virginia City - "Roughing It" It is hilarious, and only a bit of an exaggeration. Well, some exaggeration - Mark Twain is notorious for that.
