Things to Do in SLT

Hi,

My husband and I will be traveling to SLT 1/11 through 1/17 for some rest and relaxation + some winter fun and sightseeing. We are flying into Sacramento and renting a 4WD SUV. I should mention that we are coming from Florida, so the winter weather should provide us with some entertainment on it's own!

We plan on trying out a little bit of skiing and snowshoeing, but we are curious about other activities that may be fun (weather permitting, of course). We would like to drive to Yosemite and do some sightseeing there, but I understand that it is quite a drive for just a day trip. Perhaps it would be worth staying a night inside the park? Any recommendations on accommodations at Yosemite?

Any must-try restaurants in SLT?

We are on a budget, so the cheaper the better! :)

A few other activities to do at the South Shore are- ice skating at Heavenly Village, a lake tour (yes they run in the winter), and just east of Montbleu in the field you can rent snowmobiles or take a horse sleigh ride.

Yosemite is just too far for a day trip....especially in the winter. An overnight stay is highly recommended. Getting lodging at this late date in the park could be difficult. Check over the Yosemite site for tips and ideas.

I don't think there are any "must-try" restaurants, but everyone seems to have a favorite.

You should have a nice trip to Tahoe. What is your price range for dinners? There are some must try restaurants, but when you say you are on a budget, what do you want to spend?

A great view can be had from the Forest Buffet on top of Harrah's Hotel. We like the food at the Hard Rock Cafe in Harvey's Hotel and also mid range is Tepp's Villa Roma in SLT. Red Hut is good for breakfast.

Red Hut Waffle Shop has great breakfasts! It is a small, diner style venue with really good food and service. If you like Italian food, try Cafe Fiore, it is also a small venue so call in advance for reservations here. :)

Thanks for the feedback, so far!

I didn't realize they still had lake tours in the winter time, so I am very excited to here about that option! The sleigh ride sounds pretty cool, too!

I've learned that you can't really put a price on good food, so I am really open to any suggestions in that area. I really love the idea of enjoying a nice view, so I will look into Forrest Buffet. I've heard a lot about Red Hut here on TA, so we will be sure to try that, as well.

Still considering Yosemite. It looks like their is still lodging available inside the park and while it isn't outrageously $$, it may be a little steep for us. BUT, I can't imagine being so close without checking it out!!

The forest Buffet has decent food and views, but Friday's steak house has a better view of the lake and better food. There's some good food in Tahoe - but, there's not really any great food.

If you choose to stay at Zephyr Cove cabins you can take the Delta Queen steamboat tour as well as a snow mobile tour (supposedly the only one with a lake view). http://www.zephyrcove.com/

There's ice skating in Heavenly village, as well as a couple of movie theaters. There is a comedy club and a regular magic show in town. Johnny Lang will be playing at Harrah's on the 12th. That's just off the top of my head. There's plenty to do.

If you want to up your budget In South Lake Tahoe, our favorite restaurant with a view is, 19 Kitchen, on the top floor of Harvey's Hotel. Reservations suggested for a window table. This hotel is closest to the lake.

For a special meal, we love the Lone Eagle Grill, 25 minute drive to Incline Village in the north. They serve lunch or dinner, and are located lake front at the Hyatt Hotel. Everything you want in the winter, huge roaring fireplaces, large picture windows over looking the lake, live entertainment and an outdoor fire pit, for cocktails before or after dinner. Expensive, but lunch would cost less.
