Which area should we stay at for Heavenly ski resort?

Hi there,

My family and I (wife+ 2 kids aged 7 & 9) are travelling to the Heavenly area for the first time from overseas in mid January. We are there to predominately ski and won’t really be partying too hard however we do enjoy a few après drinks after skiing :)

For a first time visitor to the area I have really been struggling to work out the best area we should stay at? From what I can work out on the various maps etc is that there are a couple of main areas of lodging to stay like the area around the Stage Coach chair (Nevada side), California Lodge area and at the base of the Gondola towards the lake??

I have pricing for all of these locations but I am wondering if anyone could please recommend a specific area to stay (or not to stay)?

To advise the things what we are looking for or normally do I thought I would mention the following.

*We are mainly there to ski and would prefer to catch the shuttle bus or walk to lifts if possible. We probably will still have a car though as we do plan to visit Kirkwood a couple of times. We will occasionally go out to restaurants and definitely will have an après beverage a few times.

I did have another similar post (no luck with responses) so though I would try again.

We GREATLY appreciate any advice given!

Thanking you in advance for help.

Cheers

Matt

The Marriott Timber Lodge is adjacent to Heavenly and is very nice. :)

The Marriott Timber Lodge is most convenient (plus you can get something with a small kitchen for some meals at home) if it is in your price range. You can walk out of the lodge and onto the Gondola. Nothing is more convenient.

Otherwise, something close to that and in that area of Tahoe would be most convenient. You will be able to easily get to the Gondola and start your day on the slopes. If you stay near Stage Coach you will be far from everything else.

Depending on what sort of lodging you are interested in, you may want to check out a vrbo type of option. (vrbo.com) I really like having more of a homestyle atmosphere if I am going to be having some down time to relax, cook, and whaterver else.

Have fun if you get over to Kirkwood (my favorite)

I hope you get great conditions~

Since the Marriott Grand Residence, on the other side of the gondola from the Marriott Timber Lodge is an ownership property, instead of a timeshare, you can find availability on VRBO. Love the Grand. There is an ice rink and movie theater right there. Dining and shopping and walking distance to casinos. A great grocery is across the street - Raleys.

There are 2 Marriott hotels at the Gondola. Marriott Timber Lodge & Marriott Grand. The Marriott Grand is my favorite & they have 1 bedroom, 2 bath villas that would work great for your family. There is a private bedroom & bathroom for you & your wife. The other room has a sofa sleeper for the kids and their own bathroom. There is also a fully equipped kitchen for meals. They also have a spa and sauna to rest your sore muscles after skiing. Only downfall is that it can be a little expensive in the winter time. You may also want to look into the cost of riding the gondola. Believe it can be very expensive especially for family of 4 but there may be a discount with a lift ticket? There are many more restaurant/apres drink options in this area rather than on the Nevada side which is rather sparse in that regard. There is a grocery store across the street from this hotel.

I agree with looking into the vrbo.com option as there are many homes/condos on both the Nevada and California sides available for rent.

The gondola is included in any lift ticket for skiing. The price is the same whether they stay near the Stage Coach, California Base or in the village area.

Thanks you so much for all your help, its really appreciated! By the sounds of things I should maybe look for something near the Gondola.

I have been looking at VRBO as that is the type of accommodation I am after also. Most of the home style places seem to be around the stage coach lift area ( sorry not sure what this areas is actually called) and also around the California lodge.

Thanks again

When we booked the Marriott Grand the prices on the Marriott website were much less expensive then vrbo.com which is my usual route finding condos. Just make sure to double check so you get the best deal.
