Do we need snow chains in early October?

We are planning a trip to South Lake Tahoe sometime in the first week of October. We plan to drive from Napa Valley to South Lake Tahoe. Do we need to carry snow-chains?

It would be unlikely for a storm of such magnitude to require chains to come through in early October. That doesn't mean it's never happened before but I wouldn't bet on it. And there are certainly lots of places to buy chains along the way if by some fluke it happens.

Are you driving a rental car? Many rental car companies do not allow putting chains on to avoid damage.

It will still be nice at the first of October. Warmish in the day, cold at night but very unlikely to have snow that would stick at the very beginning of October. I wouldn't worry about chains at all.

Agree = no chains

Sometimes a random snow storm will wander through - but its for a few hours and then done. It does not stay on thet road as suzytravels already did a good job of answering. We've been through this a number of times and can be a gorgeous 70 degree day; next day snow; and then wonderful sun again....

but right now, I figure you will be just fine and enjoying our gorgeous fall weather - hopefully the fall colors start to show when you visit. enjoy.

Not likely. You are talking about it snowing pretty heavily in very cold conditions to create a situation where the snow falls, sticks and accumulates to make the road icy. That is not likely until winter.

I traveled over Carson Pass-Hwy 88 (8500 ft. elevation) this morning and there was some snow falling, but it was not sticking. The fall colors are at their peak now in Hope Valley. The fall colors seem to be early this year.
