St James Club Questions

There have been many posts about St James. It seems like most people think it is a great resort with subpar beaches. This is are first time to Antigua and we have exchanged into St James.

1) any suggestions on a great beach beach near by? Can we walk or would we need a taxi?

2) are there any great restaurants in walking distance?

3) Does anyone know beer prices at the resort?

4) D o they have al carte menus and approx. prices?

Thanks for your help

Shelly

Another ?

Our exchange unit reservation ends on 6/22, but our flight leaves on 6/23. Any inexpensive options on Barbuda? Can you ferry back fom Barbuda in the morning? If not, any suggestions for a nice place on a beach near the airport? We are looking at Coconut and Sugar. Any others?

St James is indeed a good resort. I would add that the beaches are only described as in any way sub-par in comparison to some of Antigua's other beaches - which are numerous and in some cases exquisite. One beach can get a bit windy at times, and there have, on occasions, been issues with Sargasso weed - both of these issues are completely out of the management's control, and they do an amazing job of keeping both beaches prisine and guest-friendly. So don't worry that you need to leave the resort for beach time!

However, there are a couple of other lovely beaches close by at English Harbour. Galleon Beach (which is overlooked by the iconic Shirley Heights) is a good option - and for strong swimmers there's some good snorkelling there too. There's a bar and restaurant and some shade available. Alternatively, Pigeon Beach, with Bumpkins restaurant, is another nice choice - this is a particularly nice swimming beach.

As far as eating out, you're going in low season, so some restaurants in English Harbour/Falmouth will be closed or about to close for summer. That said, more stays open now than it used to, and there's still a range of places to eat and drink to suit all budgets. www.antiguanice.com usually has a list of opening times by establishment a little nearer the time.

I would add that, unless you particularly want to go out to eat every night, it is probably worth taking the AI option for at least some of the time. To eat and drink a la carte is expensive, and for the price of dinner with a drink, you can buy AI for a whole day.

It sounds as if you are having a villa, so you may also want to make some meals at home. Nothing better than sitting on your balcony overlooking that gorgeous bay with a drink in your hand!. Ooh, wish I was there now!

Do you know if there is a shuttle from St James to take you to English Harbour? If so do they charge you?

No there isn't - not to English Harbour. There is one to St. John's daily, but I don't know how much it is.

There are plenty of taxis at the resort, and I believe that the return fare to English Harbour is around 20-25 US$, but that would need to be confirmed by somebody else.

Is there any beaches, restaurants, or attractions in walking distance of St James Club?

St James's Club is fairly isolated on it's own peninsula. There is a good restaurant called Hideout within a mile. But for anything else you need to hire a car or take a taxi.

However, the resort is set in large grounds, and you can walk up the hill behind it to get spectacular views of Willoughby Bay and the surrounding area.

It would be worth hiring a taxi and driver to show you some sights for at least one day.

Thank you for your quick response. Do you know about the Verandah? Is there more in walking distance than St James?
