Lake Tahoe from Yosemite arriving May 16th for 2 nights

Hello everyone.

My husband and I ( very late 50's and from uk) will be leaving Yosemite on 16th May and travelling to the lake.

We will probably do VRBO as all of them seem available at the moment! We like peace and quiet so this seems a better option.

Not sure how long journey will take from Y although we plan to leave not later than 10a.m. We are not sure which road we will come in on yet ( my map book has the main fold right on that bit)!

We will probably do the west side of the lake, but are not sure where to base ourselves. We have a rental car.

We can only do short trails and need to be based somewhere quiet but with nearby facilities for food shopping and restaurants.

We are not into casinos or anything, just want to visit the most scenic points.

Also when leaving the lake and travelling to possibly Santa Rosa, does it make a lot of difference whether you leave from the northern or southern end time wise? If leaving from the northern end would the Yuba city route be a better way to come down into the Santa Rosa area? Not sure how bad it would be going through

Sacramento. Does anyone have a rough idea how long the various routes would take? Weatherwise I will be catering for all conditions as regards clothes!

I am sorry to ask so many questions!!

Many thanks to all!

These forums are a big help to us and have been instrumental in

planning our trip.

I would suggest driving Hwys 49, 88, 89 into Tahoe from Yosemite since most likely Tioga Pass will be closed in mid-May.

Forget the Yuba City route. It will take you way out of the way. Either 50 or 80 (depending on where you are at Tahoe) through Sacramento and then I-80 to Hwy 12 to Santa Rosa is your best route. It's a 3.5 hour drive and traffic is not usually a problem except on Sunday afternoons and evenings. Also avoid morning commute hours on weekedays before 9am.

The drive from Yosemite to Lake Tahoe will take about 5 hours. My prefered route would be: 120-49-88-89 which will take you to Meyers and Lake Tahoe. This is a scenic drive through some California gold rush towns and does not require you to drive through Sacramento traffic. Check some of the online maps such as MapQuest for detailed information. I will let others answer some of your other questions.

Can you find a vrbo rental with only a two night stay, we always stay a week? Sometimes the advance deposit and clean out fees which can be $75 depending on the size of rental, make it easier to just stay at small inn.

May will be quiet all around the lake, often it's past skiing and before the summer season begins, so a good time to visit, less crowds.

Would you like something like the small Black Bear B&B, or do you want your own cabin?

Thank you CAnative.

I have looked at Black Bear and it looks ok, though haven't read reviews yet.

We absolutely have to have a quiet location. I have looked at tons of vacation rentals, and all are available, most for two nights.

We cannot stay longer as we are moving on to Santa Rosa area for two nights and back to San Fran for our last two nights in CA.

Is the main lodge at Black Bear quiet and do you have any room or cabin preferences?

We need to be able to get to restaurants easily ( one vegetarian).

I was searching for rentals, as having a washer/ dryer would be useful at that stage of our trip!

Anyway, thanks so much for your input.

Very kind of you to help us Brits out!

Kind regards

VS
