First trip to Tahoe - need advise.

Hi TA experts!

We are planning on a 2 day stopover @ Lake Tahoe around mid December. We would like to know which is better to spend time for that time of the year - North or South? We are traveling with a toddler. We are looking to just relax, drive around. & enjoy some scenery. Is it a severe snow time in Tahoe because we are not used to driving in snow?

Thanks for your help!

If you want to just relax, drive around & enjoy some scenery I'd stay at North Lake. South Lake has big casinos and is more like Vegas with pine trees IMHO.

Will it be a a severe snow time? We hope! "Severe snow" means good skiing, but it isn't hard to get around and the roads are generally cleared quickly.

The snow situation will surely impact your ability to drive around anywhere.

If it's really snowy you likely won't be driving around so you need to consider being somewhere that meets your other needs. If it in't snowing you can pretty much drive where ever you want.

Maybe choose a village like Squaw, Northstar or Heavenly. That way you'd have things to do if it snows a bunch. If it doesn't snow Tahoe is small enough that you can drive around form any of those locations.

Don't worry about the 3 main casinos in south lake tahoe, I was in Vegas in April for the first time and I can assure you that the casino area in Tahoe isn't anything like Vegas. The casino area in SLT is so small if you momentarily closed your eyes you may miss it entirely.

Not only can the weather be a major factor, but having a toddler brings other issues. The north shore has small towns with services more spread out. Taking out a toddler with a stroller can be a problem if the weather turns bad for you. You might consider staying near the Heavenly area, as there are many services and things to see and do if the weather is nasty. This area is easier to navigate a stroller.
