I was considering going to the Calgary Stampede but some reviwers say it is expensive and crowded.
Can anyone suggest any other good rodeos which are not so expensive and do not have lots of fairground rides?
I am not tied to any time of the year but would like to see a traditional rodeo.

The Calgary Stampede is probably the biggest event in Calgary every year. The whole town pretends they're cowboys for a week. Edmonton has the Canadian Finals Rodeo, but that's in November, and not really a traditional rodeo, because its indoors. It has to be indoors because November can be an unpleasant time to be here. Most towns of virtually any size in western Canada have a rodeo at some point during the summer. That may be what you're looking for, as they have a bit more "charm" and local flair. I'm not sure about Banff, but I know Jasper has a summer rodeo. If you already have a general itinerary, you may be able to find a rodeo near your schedule with a little research.
Rodeos in Western Canada are almost a weekly event. Depending upon where you are there is usually a rodeo not far away. Here is a link to the 2013 Pro Rodeo Canada website with their schedule.

I know this is not an all inclusive list of all rodeos as there are many regional rodeos that may not be listed.
Find a small town rodeo. Then get yourself a hat ,some wranglers, some boots watch some events then go in behind the shoots meet some cowboys tell them where you are from . They will look after you and you will have the time of your life.
