Travel by the seat of our pants

We are going to be flying into quebec, then leisurely going to charlovoix region. We have 12days and want to know what time of the year would be best to travel without reservations into charlovioux and possibly perce? We want to take our time and visit small towns and scenery.

Avoid July if you do not want to make reservations. I prefer the fall from mid-september to mid-october. It is cooler, but nice and colorful.

Thanks, I know we can't see whales then but will everything else be open? If we go to Charlovoix area and want to stay a few days where do you suggest? We really don't want to live out of a suitcase every day. Thank you so much

Well with 12 days you could certainly do a lot and probably go Québec City /Charlevoix / Saguenay Fjord / ferry to South Shore and the Gaspé Peninsula tour even a few days in Montréal!

To do that though you must take into consideration that the Gaspé Peninsula is the last region to open for tourism in very late May, early June at some places and the first to close between mid September to our Canadian Thanksgiving in October.

So if you visit in June or September you will be able to catch everything and also be able to go without reservations.

In fact it would make sense in late summer / early fall to start by the Gaspé Loop and then do Charlevoix where the fall colors will have already arrived, etc. etc while in June it should be the exact reverse and no fall colors.

I would pick early to mid September to do a trip like that as the summer rush is over , plenty of hotels can be had with no reservation.

If driving to Tadoussac to see Whales you''l have to think about which ferry you'll use to cross over to the Gaspe.

To give an idea of distance its 1600kms from Quebec City to Perce then back to Quebec City.

If you are interested in seeing the fall colours and have 12 days, the last week in September and the 1st week of October are the best weeks to see them. And you will see more of it on the south shore than the north shore, since the latter has more evergreens, especially in Charlevoix county.

Usually not so cold but it varies a lot from one year to the other. Usually a bit chilly at night.

Having a maritime climate the Gaspé area can have better days than Québec City or even Montréal.

As per Eirelover suggestion for late September, this is for the Charlevoix, Bas Saint-Laurent and Québec City areas, A tad bit later in the Gaspé and a good 5 to 10 days later in Easten Townships and Laurentides. Finally in the Island of Montréal, the microclimate makes happens the last, in the last third of October.
