The one at Aux Anciens Canadiens was pretty awesome. There is also a seller at the marche du vieux port that sells some very good ones.

Thank you, Whitestone. That sounds delicious and in line with what I was envisioning. Are the pies fresh? Can I can pick up a hot one? If not, I'll ask the hotel about heating one up for me. Yum!

Maybe because they bake them you could call them and ask, but I am pretty sure that your hotel can do it for you. People are so friendly in Quebec.

I also think Aux Anciens Canadiens would be your best bet. I don't really trust "Royaume de la Tarte". I don't know them, maybe they make awesome pies, but there's an issue to keep in mind from a cultural point of view: What people who live in Quebec City and Montreal call "tourtière" is NOT actual "Tourtière du Lac-St-Jean". Plain tourtière is basically meat pie, made from beef and pork or veal. Not bad, but not a real "tourtière du Lac-St-Jean". TLSJ will be a deep dish, almost a casserole, with game meats (traditionnally partridge and hare) as well as some beef, pork and/or chicken, and onions and potatoes. This is all baked inside a pie-like crust, but it will be a deep dish, and much bigger than a regular round pie-dish. I think Aux Anciens Canadiens would serve this, as their menu states "Wild meats". Real TLSJ is delicious, my mom used to make it when I was younger. If you drive the 175 road from Quebec to Saguenay/Lac-St-Jean, the restaurant at "L'Étape" (halfway there, you can't miss it!) serve a pretty decent version as well. But there is nothing as disappointing to someone who has grown up on real TLSJ to be expecting that, and then be served a tiny slice of ordinary meat pie...

When I go for Christmas in the family we by our Lac St-Jean tourtières from le Royaume de la Tarte, they have been there for more than 60 years. Yes Aux Anciens Canadiens, Restaurant la Nouvelle France and finally le Buffet de l'Antiquaire will serve you some but I can think it comes from the same place.

A tourtière du Lac St-Jean is a tourtière and there is also meat pie....

How come somebody thant don't know something can give an honest opinion?

Whitestoneny: I was just saying that in many places in Quebec what is called "Tourtiere" will actually be meat pie. I'm glad to hear that Royaume de la Tarte has good tourtieres, but being in Quebec City there was a clear possibility that they might sell meat pie as tourtiere. You have no idea the arguments I get into every year with born and bred Quebec City residents that what they eat is not tourtiere but just meat pie! I thought it would be interesting to explain the distinction to someone who wouldn't know about it.

Thanks for your answer Barbanellie, you are right. At my brother in law home at Christmas time so many discussion about food including Tourtières and Fêves au lard.

If you have the chance go to Royaume de la Tarte it is older than my brother in law.... I love their home made products.

There is also another spot on the Island of Orleans, les buffets de l'Ile, I think that can supply real Tourtière
