Just Back - A Few Recpmmendations and Observations

Got got back from a very short trip to one of our favorite cities, though truth betold we will be back for a couple of nights in January on our way to a long delayed return to Quebec City.

But I did want to make a couple of observations.

First, terrific Christmas values, at least we thought so, but please don't be seduced by "Black Friday", especially when your Thanksgiving is a month earler. When mentioning it to several people someone pointed out that with the number of US companies operating in Canada it just become adopted. Maybe so, but it still struck me a odd to see it in Montreal.

Second, the Montreal Casino, with all the renovations, is terrific. And yes, I would still be saying this even if I didn't come out a little bit ahead. The facitilty is state of the art, and unlike any I've seen in the States with the multiple gaming floors. We aren't big time gamblers in any sense but this was fun, whether gambling or not. A must see for any visitor who likes the slots or gaming tables.

And finally, a shout out to bogwoppit and big thanks for recommending AM 800 for the regular traffic updates. I was a little concerned what with all the repairs going at the Champlain bridge. Made it over and back with no problems. I recommend it to any visitor driving north.

Now I just hope it is fully replaced by 2018 as promised.

That sums it up for this trip. We did our usual things as well plus I ate too much rack of lamb, but boy was it great!!

Happy Holidays everyone!!

Black Friday happened pretty much right across Canada .... mainly as a way to try to keep shoppers in Canada instead of heading across the border...

What I find astonishing is that apparently it is getting a foothold in the UK as well ... where they don't even celebrate Thanksgiving...LOL...

Lots of racks of lamb! LOL! (wink, wink)

US chains, & Black Friday. Well from someone that spent many Thanksgiving in the US I knew about the Thanksgiving sales but never heard the term Black Friday in my whole time over there. It is only a few years ago that I discovered this nickname and this is the first time that I have seen it widely used here and with plenty of sales happening. Us chains are big and really works like dinausors. When in Florida I noticed that places like Gaps or Nieman Marcus' etc. did present winter clothes in fall amd they were useless over there but then right after Thanksgiving the whole stock was discounted and the summer clothes were back on racks in time to get the snowbirds money. So I bought my winter clothes in Florida in early December and then my summer clothes in Montréal where I usually spend a week or two in January! Crazy ways of doing business...

Glad to hear that you were able to avoid the congestion on Champlain Bridge. As per the 2018 date I am dubitative about that particularly knowing that some experts have cast doubts.

As per the Casino the rumors that I heard were not very positive but I will pay a visit now, pun tintended.

I thought black simply meant the day when US stores' ledgers would show a profit, as in the time of year when they got out of the red. In Vancouver one store was advertising Black Frid-eh!

Like phpr said, many Canadians would go south of the border for shopping on Black Friday, costing Canadian retailers (both of US chains and independent) a lot of sales. They only started doing it here to meet the competition in the US and keep shoppers here.

Well I guess I understand the point of Black Friday but it is simply a marketing tool, designed to play off the day after US Thanksgiving. Of course most stores in the US were OPEN on Thanksgiving, something I think should be a crime but that is another topic. From what I heard Black Friday sales were down in the US. Maybe Canada made out better. Hey, we were shopping there right! LOL!

Glad as always to hear from you all!

Just saw your post Sylve. I read over the weekend that is why the loonie is falling also, to keep shoppers home. Hey, good for foreign visitors. I miss the old exchange rate of 1 dollar US to get 1.50 Canadian. I probably miss more the ability to get the taxes we paid back at the border. But even with the exchange close to par and no tax return we still love coming back!

actually a lower loonie is probably better overall for the Canadian economy.....
